Remember “Sabrina the Teenage Witch” with Melissa Joan Hart? That was a fun show what with the two hot aunts and the talking cat and all that. If you’re even more old school than your image of Sabrina might be from the old Archie comics. However, if you’ve been keeping up with your Sabrina lore then you might be aware of how the character has gotten a bit darker and that darkness is coming to television.
Variety is reporting that The CW and Warner Bros is working on a new television series based on “Sabrina the Teenage Witch” that will have a darker horror themed edge to it. According to the site the new series could be based on comic series “Chilling Adventures of Sabrina.” Here’s how they describe it:
…. reimagines the origin and adventures of Sabrina as a dark coming-of-age story that traffics in horror, the occult, and witchcraft. The series is described as being tonally in the vein of horror classics like “Rosemary’s Baby” and “The Exorcist,” and will see Sabrina wrestling to reconcile her dual nature as a half-witch, half-mortal while standing against the evil forces that threaten her, her family, and the daylight world humans inhabit.
Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa will serve as a writer on the series which makes sense as he’s done horror before with the “Carrie” and “Town that Dreaded Sundown” remake and is behind the current Archie revival series “Riverdale.” So he’s a perfect match for a new horror-themed Sabrina.
So what do you think? Ready for a darker teenage witch?
