We’re living in the era of films being secretly filmed and it’s actually pretty rad. Recently we learned that “The Gallows 2” is currently undergoing test screenings and then of course there was the high profile example of “The Woods” actually being “The Blair Witch.” Well now we have another found footage film that’s been in secret production: “Unfriended 2.”
The first “Unfriended” was released in 2014 and was actually one of my favorite films of the year. It was a found footage film about a group of friends being tormented by a vengeful spirit. The story played out from the perspective of one person talking to her friends via Skype. So you saw her Google relevant plot details, send secret IMs to other characters, watch YouTube clips, etc. It sounds corny, but it was a real cool way to convey the story from a unique perspective. It was especially cool if you watched the movie on your computer cause then it was way more immersive.
As for the upcoming sequel we’ve learned that the title, for now, is “Unfriended: Game Night” and the film will feature the same computer screen format that the original used. Here’s how the plot is described:
A twenty-something comes into possession of a new laptop and finds that it may have been stolen. He discovers the previous owner may be watching every move he makes and will do anything to get it back.
The title “Game Night” makes me wonder if the film will focus on things like Twitch streaming and that kind of gaming audience as it’s backdrop. I’m glad they’re returning to the same format, I’ll just be curious to see if they have enough new tricks up their sleeve to keep the film fresh and not leave it feeling like a retread of the original. Here’s hoping.
What do you think? Excited for a new “Unfriended”?
