Do you remember when Tom Cruise’s “Mummy” came out this year? Holy hell, that seems like a lifetime ago. Do you also remember when it got absolutely crushed by critics and underperformed at the box office? Well that might’ve been a bad sign for Universal and their whole Dark Universe initiative. Now there are further developments in the Dark Universe that suggest things may not be boding well for the future of that project.
Deadline as learned that Universal’s update on the “Bride of Frankenstein,” which was to be a part of the Dark Universe films, has been put on hold right before it was set to begin filming. The film was slated to star Javier Bardem as Frankenstein’s monster and Angelina Jolie was reportedly attached as the Bride. However, it’s never been clarified if she ever actually signed on to the project or was still in talks. Pre-production was currently underway with a production date set for February. However, Universal decided to put things on hold for now. Here’s what they had to say.
After thoughtful consideration, Universal Pictures and director Bill Condon have decided to postpone Bride of Frankenstein. None of us want to move too quickly to meet a release date when we know this special movie needs more time to come together. Bill is a director whose enormous talent has been proven time and again, and we all look forward to continuing to work on this film together.
That sounds . . . vague. They don’t want to move too quickly to hit a date they have had for quite some time now. And it needs more time to come together? It seems like it’s been coming together almost as long as “The Mummy” has, so it’s a bit confusing that they aren’t ready yet to push forward. Either the production is seriously hitting some hiccups or the reaction to “The Mummy” has given Universal cold feet about this whole project.
Either way, hopefully we’ll know more soon. To be completely honest I was onboard for this “Dark Universe” plan, so if Universal can do anything to save it at this point I’d love to see them try.
