I’ve had a rocky relationship with the “Purge” series, but overall I have to say I’ve enjoyed my experience with the series as a whole. And while there are many things I enjoy, I think one of the problems I’ve had is how hamfisted they are about their social commentary. The word “subtle” does not exist in the world of “The Purge” and their first promotional material continues that trend.
So earlier today we got our first look at the poster for the upcoming “Purge” prequel titled “The First Purge.” On the poster, which you can see below, the title is embroidered on the infamous red hat which often features the “Make America Great Again” slogan. So yeah, you can see where this is going.
And then, as if Universal said “I think we can do better than that”, they released the announcement trailer for “The First Purge” during the State of the Union speech. So what is “The First Purge”? Here’s a description for you:
Behind every tradition lies a revolution. Next Independence Day, witness the rise of our country’s 12 hours of annual lawlessness. Welcome to the movement that began as a simple experiment: The First Purge. To push the crime rate below one percent for the rest of the year, the New Founding Fathers of America (NFFA) test a sociological theory that vents aggression for one night in one isolated community. But when the violence of oppressors meets the rage of the marginalized, the contagion will explode from the trial-city borders and spread across the nation.
“The First Purge” is directed by Gerard McMurray from a script written by franchise creator James DeMonaco. It’ll hit theaters on July 4th.
