It’s no surprise that Blumhouse and Universal are moving forward with a sequel to “Happy Death Day.” Like most Blumhouse films, this micro-budget production made gangbusters at the box office. Not only that, but it was actually well received by audiences and critics. A powerful combo that makes a sequel all but inevitable.
Announcing via Deadline, Universal and Blumhouse have revealed who will be returning, who will be joining, and when they’ll begin filming the upcoming sequel “Happy Death 2.” It appears the sequel will be continuing the adventures of time traveling sorority girl Tree as Jessica Rothe will be reprising her role from the first film. Also returning is Israel Broussard who played Carter. It appears he’ll be returning for the sequel as Tree’s official boyfriend this time around.
Joining the couple will be Suraj Sharma (“Life of Pi”) who will be playing “Samar Ghosh, a science enthusiast and geek who enjoys coding in his spare time.” He’ll be joined by Sarah Yarkin (“American Horror Story”) who is set to play “Dre Morgan, a science geek and tom-boy with a sleepy feline gaze who is Samar’s partner-in-crime.”
Also returning to the film will be director/writer Christopher Landon. Landon has previously stated that the upcoming sequel will answer some of the time traveling questions raised by the first film. Given the inclusion of the science geeks it sounds like they’re going to get nerdy with it for the sequel.
Production will begin May 10th. No official release date has been set yet, but given that production is beginning this year and that “Happy Death Day” enjoyed its success in October last year, i’m willing to bet it’ll be released sometime in October 2019.
