John Lithgow to Play Jud Crandall in the ‘Pet Sematary’ Remake

Jason McDonald

Last month we learned that Jason Clarke was signing up to star in the upcoming remake of “Pet Sematary.”  And while Jason is a great actor, the news I’ve been waiting to hear is who could possibly play Jud Crandall.  With all do respect to everyone else in the original “Pet Sematary”, there’s only one role that seemed irreplaceable and that’s the role of Jud Crandall played by Fred Gwynne.  However, the choice they made to take on the role is a pretty good one.

Paramount has announced that John Lithgow (“Harry and the Hendersons”) will be playing Jud Crandall in the upcoming “Pet Sematary” remake.  Jud, in the original film, was an elderly neighbor who becomes fast friends with the Creed family and becomes a confidant for Luis Creed after the tragic loss of his son.  Jud, tragically, is also the man who reveals to Luis the secret ability of a neighbor pet cemetery to bring the dead back to life.  But as we all know, sometimes dead is better.

The “Pet Sematary” remake is coming by way of co-directors Dennis Widmyer and Kevin Kolsch (“Starry Eyes”).  No release date has been set, but stayed tuned.

In the meantime, what do you think of John Lithgow for the Jud Crandall?

Ya, agreed. Do we really need a remake of an already pretty decent movie. I would prefer they tap one of the many original stories out there begging for the silver screen.
