‘Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom’ Crushes it with $150 Million Opening

We’re into the summer blockbuster season now and things are looking to get crazy.  “The Incredibles 2” cracked things open last weekend with an insane $180 million opening weekend.  Now “Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom” is hoping to topple the superhero family in its opening weekend.

Despite getting mostly average reviews, “Jurassic World” managed to draw a well above average opening. The fifth Jurassic film earned an impressive $150 million in its first weekend, pushing “The Incredibles 2” down to the second spot.  However, even in second place the newest Pixar movie still pulled in $80 million. And while “Fallen Kingdom” did very well this weekend, it actually fell just short of the first “Jurassic World.” That film managed to earn $200 million back in its opening weekend.  Still, $150 million makes “Fallen Kingdom” the second-highest grossing “Jurassic Park” movie and that’s saying something.

And while “Fallen Kingdom” is the big headline, there’s another movie we should also address.  “Hereditary”, while not a box office titan, is still out there pulling in money.  In its third weekend the critical darling is still chugging along as it earned nearly $4 million.  This brings its grand total to $35 million.  Not a mind blowing figure, but still impressive for a smaller horror movie that won’t have mass appeal.

For now I suspect “Fallen Kingdom” will reign supreme as it doesn’t face any huge competition in the near future.  Next week sees the release of the “Sicario” sequel and “Uncle Drew”, both movies that probably don’t have the mass appeal of dinosaurs.  However, once July 4th rolls around things may heat up again as “The First Purge” will drop on that day and then two days later “Ant-Man and the Wasp” will crush both films.
