Jason Blum and James Wan Team-Up With ‘Housebound’ Director for Killer Doll Movie ‘M3GAN’

With “Annabelle” doing gang busters at the box office and Chucky still going strong in his own way, it’s a bit of a surprise that we haven’t seen an onslaught of killer doll flicks flooding the market.  But if someone were to take a stab at introducing a new doll to the market, I guess the guy behind the success of “Annabelle” would be the right choice.

The Hollywood Reporter has learned that producers James Wan and Jason Blum are teaming up to bring to life a new killer doll project from writer Akela Cooper (“American Horror Story”).  According to the site film, titled “M3GAN”, will center on . . .

a brilliant toy company roboticist who uses artificial intelligence to develop M3GAN, a life-like doll programmed to emotionally bond with her newly orphaned niece. But when the doll’s programming works too well, she becomes overprotective of her new friend…with terrifying results.

Wan and Blum have tasked director Gerard Johnstone with bringing the story to life.  Johnstone, you might recall, directed “Housebound” and the it was his success with black comedy that made him the ideal choice for “M3GAN” according to Blum.

We needed someone who can do the thrills and set pieces, but who also has a cheeky approach.

Give that “Housebound” was great, I’m pretty excited to see what Johnstone could do with this concept.

The only thing I see being weird about this whole project is that it involves the AI in a doll going nuts.  It’s a funny coincidence that MGM recently announced that they were remaking “Child’s Play” and in their pitch for the remake they stated that it would focus on a “technologically-advanced doll.”

There’s plenty of room for new killer dolls, but I’m eager to see which one of these films will handle the concept best.  Let the race begin.
