Here’s Our First Look at Chucky from the ‘Child’s Play’ Remake

Jason McDonald

Just the other day we learned that Aubrey Plaza and Brian Tyree Henry were joining the cast of the “Child’s Play” remake currently in works at MGM.  At the end of that post I stated that I thought this was going to be a different take on the subject and not just a straight remake of the original film.  Well, looks like I was completely wrong as we have our first look at Chucky from the upcoming remake and . . . it’s pretty much just Chucky.

Entertainment Weekly has exclusively revealed the first glimpse of the new Chucky, which you can check out down below, and the doll looks largely the same but just very clean and with sharp lines.  It looks like a Chucky doll if it were made today.  Now, this could be pre-full blown crazy mode where he looks the most gentle and innocent.  Personally, I find the look to be just fine.  But the look isn’t the problem, it’s the premise.

So the new “Child’s Play” is about a doll with artificial intelligence that terrorizes some kids.  With that premise they could have created a whole new doll and gone in an entirely different direction than the original Child’s Play.  I think that would have been the best course of action since the Chucky we all know and love is still going to be making direct-to-DVD movies and TV shows.  It’s bizarre to have a new big screen Chucky and then old Chucky that everyone loves in smaller markets.  Chucky has long since abandoned the “Child’s Play” name so that would have been perfect for a new set of movies about a different killer doll.  Now that’s it just Chucky 2.0 I’m afraid we’re going to be getting into a “Nightmare on Elm Street” remake scenario all over again.

Okay that’s my rant. Along with the aforementioned actors Gabriel Bateman will be playing the unsuspecting child who gets Chucky for his birthday.  Check out the first image below and let us know what you think.
