Michael Chaves to Direct ‘The Conjuring 3’

I try to be optimistic about things and I’m eager to give new people a chance at proving themselves, but I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t a little disappointed by this news.  It looks like James Wan won’t be directing the third “Conjuring” film, but he has hand picked his replacement.

According to THR Michael Chaves, who is currently working on “The Curse of La Llorona”, has signed on to direct “The Conjuring 3.”  Wan has been serving as a producer for Chaves’ La Llorona feature, so he’s gotten a first hand look at how the director works.  Seems like he must’ve seen something he liked as he helped to select him as his replacement for “The Conjuring 3.”

Wan will still be around though as he’ll be serving as producer for the next film.  Also returning will be writer David Leslie Johnson who worked on “The Conjuring 2.”

This pretty bittersweet news.  Chaves has obviously impressed New Line and Wan in order to be given the reins to a big franchise like “The Conjuring”, but it’s a shame to see Wan step away from the project.  In my mind Wan and “The Conjuring” are so intermingled that it’s hard to imagine the film being made without him.  Here’s to hoping that the transition goes smoothly and doesn’t feel as drastic as the change from “Insidious 2” to “Insidious 3.”
