Earlier this year we learned that Oscar winning director Jordan Peele was possibly in talks to produce a remake of “Candyman.” Now it looks like that rumor has turned out to be almost entirely true.
According to Variety MGM, Jordan Peele, and Win Rosenfeld are teaming up to produce a new “Candyman” movie. The article lists the movie as a “spiritual sequel” to the original. Here’s the premise:
The film returns to the neighborhood where the legend began: the now-gentrified section of Chicago where the Cabrini-Green housing projects once stood.
Based on that, it sounds like it’ll be set in the same world established in the first movie, but not necessarily tied directly to the events of it.
Directing the film will be Nia DaCosta, who recently wrote and directed “Little Woods” which currently holds a 100% on Rotten Tomatoes. So that’s pretty damn promising. Though it’s not explicitly said in the article it sounds like Nia will also be writing “Candyman.”
Production is expected to start in Spring of next year with a release date set for June 12, 2020.
