Netflix is Working on a ‘Resident Evil’ Series

It’s a genuine REnaissance these days. “Resident Evil 7” was a smash hit and the newest entry, “Resident Evil 2,” seems to be doing exceedingly well (reviewing that one right now).  However, what’s missing is a successful adaptation.

Last we heard, the film series was potentially getting a reboot with “Strangers: Prey at Night” director Johannes Roberts at the helm.   But it looks like that might not be the only adaptation in the works.

Deadline is reporting that Netflix is partnering with Constantin Film to produce a scripted series for their streaming service based on the iconic game series.  Constantin Film was the studio behind the recent RE films and behind the current reboot.

So with so many games to choose from, what will the new “Resident Evil” series be based on? Well it doesn’t sound like it’ll explore anyone in particular.   As Deadline reports:

No one is commenting but I hear the plan is for the series to expand the Resident Evil universe and deepen the exiting mythology. I hear the series will keep the basic premise, which also served as a setup for the movie franchise. The drama series will explore the dark inner workings of the Umbrella Corporation and the new world order caused by the outbreak of the T-virus. While the project is in early stages, the series is expected to incorporate all of Resident Evil’s signature elements, including action sequences and “easter eggs.”

I don’t necessarily need a series that perfectly retells the games, I have the games for that, but one that doesn’t reject everything about them to do its own thing would be welcomed.  I like the ideaing of further exploring the Umbrella Corporation because they’ve always had such an insane agenda in the games that I think it’d be amazing to see the day to day lives of the people that work in that kind of business.

At this point it sounds like the project is early on, so I wouldn’t expect any big developments anytime soon.  Still, I’m excited to see someone take a different stab at the RE series.  Hopefully this format will allow it to bare more interesting fruit.
