‘The Banana Splits’ Are Back . . . in a Horror Movie

I like to think that I have a wide variety of pop culture knowledge stuffed into my oversized head.  I’m not gonna win every pub quiz, but I might be the guy who gets some really obscure ones.  That being said, I had completely forgotten the Banana Splits were a thing.

First of all, I wasn’t a child of the ’60s so I think I can be excused for not remembering these drug induced creations.  Secondly, I don’t think anyone has talked about the Banana Splits since the ’70s (okay, yes, they had a comic book crossover with the Suicide Squad in 2017).  But here we are, for some reason Warner Bros has decided to dust off this  Hanna-Barbera/Krofft brothers creation, that was originally created for a children’s variety program, and repackage them for a horror movie.

According to Deadline Warner Bros Home Entertainment and Blue Ribbon Content are teaming up for the new film that’ll likely debut on VOD/Blu-Ray before being released on the SyFy channel.  Here’s the official synopsis for the project according to the site:

In the upcoming horror thriller, a boy named Harley and his family (brother Austin, mother Beth, and father Mitch) attend a taping of The Banana Splits TV show, which is supposed to be a fun-filled birthday for young Harley and business as usual for Rebecca, the producer of the series. But things take an unexpected turn — and the body count quickly rises. Can Harley, his mom and their new pals safely escape?

The original show centered on four humanoid animals named Fleegle (a beagle), Bingo (a gorilla), Drooper (a lion), and Snorky (an elephant) as they hosted a variety hour that included live action and animated segments.

Now, everyone seems to be assuming that the Banana Splits will be behind the massacre, but that last sentence of the synopsis has me wondering if maybe perhaps the Banana Splits will be the “new pals.”  It would certainly be a swerve no one would expect and would protect the image of the original characters.

That being said, I think this is definitely going to be about the Splits killing people.  Now why is this movie happening?  Well I think someone wisely saw that the current adaptation of “Five Nights at Freddy’s” is taking a while to get going.  So someone saw their opportunity and decided to put out a similar film before the big budget movie could make it to theaters.  That’s just my theory, but it sounds plausible.
