‘Gremlins’ is Getting an Animated Series

Jason McDonald

While I’m not a big fan of unnecessary sequels (who is really?) I’ve been dying for someone to bring Gizmo back into my life.  I love the “Gremlins” films and have always had a soft spot in my heart for Gizmo.  Over the years we’ve gotten stories and heard rumors about new “Gremlins” projects being in the works, but so far nothing has come to fruition. I’m just constantly being tortured by possibilities, but maybe this latest project will finally come to pass.

According to Variety Warner Bros is working on an animated series based on the “Gremlins” films that’ll premiere on . . . WarnerMedia’s upcoming streaming service . . . sunovabitch. Yeah, that’s right, another streaming service.   So I’ll probably never get around to watching this thing, but let’s see what it’s about.

Variety says that the series will be . . .

. . . a period piece that would follow Mr. Wing, the Chinese grandfather played in the films by Keye Luke, as a young man as he goes on adventures with the friendly Mogwai Gizmo.

Man! That sounds so adorable! I would totally watch that and possibly love the hell out of animated Gizmo.

The series is being written by Tze Chun who previously worked on “Gotham” and “Once Upon a Time.”

This actually isn’t the first time a cartoon based on the “Gremlins” has been teased.  In the ’90s, around the time of “Tiny Toons,”  there were plans to try and make a series, but they never got much further than the planning stages.

Anyways, stay tuned as we await more news about this new show I probably won’t get to see.
