I’ll be the first to admit that I was only a casual fan of early “Mortal Kombat.” I wasn’t deep into the fighting scene, but I respected what the early “Mortal Kombat” games had to offer. Over the top gore, bizarre looking characters, and a touch of cheese made the whole thing somewhat appealing to a young horror fan.
When I really started to pay attention to the series, though, was with “Mortal Kombat 9.” That’s when the series really revolutionized fighting games by putting a heavy emphasis on their story mode. I’m sure there were fighters I didn’t know about that had a strong emphasis on story, but for the most part people were used to static images and maybe one or cut scenes for a character. “Mortal Kombat 9” opened it up by retelling the first three “Mortal Kombat” games in a truly cinematic way.
The series has carried on that tradition and “Mortal Kombat 11” looks to only be upping the ante. There’s a whole lot going on the story trailer below. We’ve got young kombatants meeting their older selves and fantastic scenarios like Kano with a chaingun. Check out the trailer for yourself down below.
“Mortal Kombat 11” releases on 4/23/19.
