A Native American Reserve Becomes the Last Bastion of Hope Against a Zombie Horde in ‘Blood Quantum’

Every now and then you hear a concept that leaves you thinking “That’s such a cool idea, how hasn’t it been done before?” Such is the case of “Blood Quantum” which has just released their first look today.

Deadline put out a report today about revealing that XYZ Films will be handling the worldwide sales of a new zombie thriller called “Blood Quantum.”  The film will be shopped around at Cannes and . . . well that’s all dry industry stuff, let’s talk about the movie.

In “Blood Quantum” . . .

. . . The dead are coming back to life outside the isolated Mi’gMaq reserve of Red Crow, except for its indigenous inhabitants who are immune to the zombie plague. A tribal sheriff must protect his son’s pregnant girlfriend, apocalyptic refugees, and other members of the reserve from the hordes of walking white corpses.

The film is being written and directed by Jeff Barnaby who is, himself, a member of the Mi’gmaq.  The film will star Michael Greyeyes (“Fear the Walking Dead”), Elle-Maija Tailfeathers (“On the Farm”), and Forrest Goodluck (“The Revenant”).

Beyond the plot synopsis the only other tidbit that Deadline has to share is the first image that you can check out down below.

I think this plot has a lot of potential.  Zombie stories have always been at their best when they highlight human drama.  There’s a lot of things that can be done with the concept of a group of Native Americans immune to a disease.  Here’s hoping they can get the proper mileage out of that premise.
