I was REALLY scared when i was reading both The Shining and IT by King. I read Shining when I was about 7 or 8 so that goes without saying. However, IT, I read for the first time when I was in 11th grade in high school. i only read it at night after my homework was done and it was close to the summer so it was raining a lot. My room was in my parents basement, too, which made it extra creepy (love the atmosphere of watching horror movies and reading book)

Several have mentioned The Girl Next Door by Jack Ketchum. I haven't read it, but I would have to say another one he wrote called Off Season is very disturbing, brutal even. I guess I should check out The Girl Next Door now.

He's more known for his comics work, but in the early 90's, John Byrne wrote a horror novel called The Whipping Boy, that was pretty disturbing. It's not in print anymore, but if you spot it at a used bookstore, grab it!

Ok so maybe it's not so scary...But the most disturbing thing I've read is still "Guts" by Chuck Palahniuk. I read it when the novel Haunted first came out and I couldn't bring myself to read the rest of the book. To this day I cannot read that short story. I've read the rest of the book, and I've dared myself to read the story again and I just can't.

I'm also now terrified to go poop when I'm high because I've convinced myself it feels like my intestines are falling out. Thanks for that one there, Chuck.

I really enjoy Edgar Allan Poe's stories too..I've always loved short stories..when done right, they're so effective and then it's over and you're left just thinking about them. Masque of the Red Death, the Cask of Amontillado and the facts in the case of Mr. Valdemar are my favorites.

Without being graphic, he sets the mood and tone that is just creepy...not the most disturbing...but some of the best ever written
