The Grudge movies (1 & 2) was written and directed by the same japanese director who did the japanese grudge movies with the same actress playing Kayako so there is a sense of continuity there.

The original "The eye" from hong kong (2002) was also good. Fairly creepy if you yet to watch it.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JURUfZm7paw

Kairo/Pulse (2001)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qjOEpIDa6_s

One Missed Call /Chakushin Ari (2003) - the ring tone is pretty memorable and the tv studio exorcism is far out.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wpsZQrJazq0

Darkness
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lltOrcviQ4I

The Devil's backbone
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BHm_Me0CDC0

When I read your post the first film to come to mind, and j don't believe anyone has mentioned yet is...

Stir of Echoes (1999) with Kevin Bacon, I remember this one being supper creepy. Im sure the story has been done to death by now but I remember loving at the time. Definitely check it out if you havnt seen it.

Tale of Two Sisters (2003) like Stir of Echoes I haven't seen this one in a long ass time so I can't say for sure how it holds up but I remember it the creep factor being maxed out in this one.

The Grudge (2006) I actually liked the U.S. version of this one, though it was super creepy, but I may be alone on that lol

The Ring was also pretty scary I thought and The Blair Witch Project...oh, and definitely check out The Entity if you haven't seen it, freaky stuff there and Barbara Hershey is a beauty!

Definitely another vote for Grave Encounters, really liked that one, one of the best found footage I've ever seen. The Changeling is brilliant, and The Orphanage is haunting and sad, but creepy at the same time. Session 9 is kind of in the same vein too

Very scary Leaves you feeling very unsure too about who's side you really should be on. That part where the face turns in the picture literally made me shout "holy shit!!". Not seen the remake because I was pretty happy with the original.
