I beg to differ about the travesty known as The Office US.
It had 3 good seasons, season 1 was a shot-for-shot remake of the English version, season 2 immediately made Jim this untouchable hearthrob type and season 3 rapidly descended into typical American schmaltz. Ever since then it's been unbearably unfunny and the last season was godawful. At this point may I offer my sincerest apologies that we gave you Catherine Tate. It wasn't our fault. It was an experiment that went hideously wrong and we can only offer our most heartfelt reparations for that horrible hag we unleashed on your fine country. It was a terrible faus pas on our part and I, personally would like to apologise for her. I hope you can find it in your heart to forgive us as a nation for that horrible woman. It wasn't our fault, she slipped through the net and somehow managed to become manager of Dunder Mifflin. Again, I am deeply ashamed we didn't drown her at birth!!!

I would also like to take this opportunity to express my sincerest apologies for giving the world Coldplay.

Eh, to each his own and all that jazz.  I still dig the US version quite a bit and prefer it to the UK version, which I also really dig nevertheless. 

Though I will agree with you on that Catherine Tate chick.  That broad's painfully unfunny and just plain irritating.

I think we had this discussion a few days ago somewhere (something about Sphere, I think)- read first then watch, or watch then read?  I'm a watch first guy.  Text, or graphic novels/comics, give a much more expansive space to tell a story, normally.

Fulc -- But you also have TV shows which only last two seasons.  Extras, The Office...I loved both those shows and they up and quit after two seasons each!  And Absolutely Fabulous...with years and years between seasons?  That's just cruel, man.

I couldn't handle TV like that.  Here in the states what usually hooks audiences are the characters, so as long as the writers stay true to them and don't contradict past continuity, we're pretty forgiving (for the most part).  Look at the US version of The Office.  Just started its 9th season, still just as funny as it ever was, the characters are all still great, it's still well-written.  In the states, if a show continues to work, they'll continue to make it. 

It's not always about money.  When we get what we think is a good show, we demand more of it even if it's not killing in the ratings or raking in the money.  It's why shows like Supernatural stay on the air; they're not mass-audience shows, they're not killing it in the ratings war, but the audiences they do have are rabid and loyal, so they reward our loyalty by keeping it going.

Although, still, there have been shows with such a rabid fanbase which were cancelled anyway.  Arrested Development, My Name is Earl and several others, all of which had large fan-bases and were highly acclaimed, but for some reason their host-channels simply decided to stop making them.

It is very character driven, that is what I really like plus the zombie makeup is awesome. I am a fan first of the comic then the series, but the series really holds its own:)

I'd love to hear the strategy meetings for TV execs.  Just in general to see what they talk about.  "Girls 16-18 will love this show!"  "Men 27-28.5 will love THIS SHOW!" "LOUD NOISES!"

The show doesn't follow the comics directly, it deals with things much more different than the comic does.

Shane dies at the end of the first comic, the first one. They cut him out fast while the show thought that having him around longer with make more interesting TV (I'd say that is the answer). It really depends on what you prefer.
