The American Film Institute, the folks probably best known for the 100 Best Movies of all Time things has just released the top 10 of 10. The top 10 American films of 10 classic genres. Guess what folks? Horror was strangely absent....
I was just talking about this with maven, and i knew they were going to shit all over horror by either ignoring it or just putting on a few weak too cool for the room films.
heres the entire list of the top 10 genres. because this ignoring horror bullshit pisses me off, im sick of it not being respected as a genre. dont bother watching this sickening show heres the complete list.

When I first saw this, I thought you meant the band AFI disses horror. I was like, what? Man, those clowns base their whole image off of horror.
As far as the American Film Institution is concerned, fuck em'. Horror has been around as long as film itself, if they don't realize that, it's their own fault. Pricks.
Its nothing new that Critical Instituations left out horror in the film industry. We should find way to contact them and have people complain. I'd love to see them do a horror list. Here is my top ten list. They are not my top ten favorites but the top ten in regards to what u said Golden about "impact on American cinema and popular culture."
1. Psycho 1960 2. Dracula 1931 3. Rosemary's Baby 1968 4. Jaws 1975 5. Night of the Living Dead 1968 6. The Exorcist 1973 7. Halloween 1978 8. Bride of Frankenstein 1935 9. The Shining 1980 10. A Nightmare on Elm Street 1984
Seems like I saw this list last year or the year before, and I think they did the same thing then. They didn't acknowledge Horror as a genre of film. It is laughable that they can broaden the genres to include, gangster and courtroom drama, but they can't even recognize Horror as a genre of film?! What BS! Either these guys are so arrogant and pompous that they completely thumbed their noses at Horror, or they don't know Jack!
What I personally find funny is that Invasion of the Body Snatchers and Alien are both horror movies. Oh, well. Horror is a legitimate genre whether or not they view it as one. That is why we are here and not doing a romantic comedy website... although... lol jk.

I would say Alien and Body Snatchers definately blur the lines as they are ore sci-fi than horror, but they do push into the horror boundaries.
However, I also noticed that while Romantic Comedy made the list, there wasnt a list for just plain old Comedy. They always say Comedy and Horror films get no respect from the AFI and film critics.....that just proves it.
Also, when I think top ten Fantasy films, I wouldnt say Groundhog Day and Big come to mind in the fantasy genre. And those are #8 and #10 on the fantasy list.

While I agree with most of what you said, I must go with Dude and say that both Invasion and Alien are straight up horror films. While Invasion could teeter either way, it is way more horror than sci-fi.
Looking over the lists for the genres they have, it may be for the best as far as leaving off horror goes. It would be nice to have the genre recognized, but I can't say I agree with some of their choices.
Now that I look at it, the whole thing was called 10 top 10's. So it's not like they were covering every genre possible. Just 10 that they felt like doing lists for. If it was every genre and they left off horror then it would be a bigger issue.

Good point. I have no idea who taught these folks to categorize films.
Man. I actually thought they meant AFI the band too then my friend said "Um...it's probably the American Film Institute" then I was a little sad because I wanted chirp AFI. Haha. Anyway I think it's bullshit that they don't include horror, you guy s pretty much summed up my view though haha.
1. Texas Chainsaw Massacre 1978 2. Night of the Living Dead 1968 3. Rosemary's Baby 1968 4. Psycho 1960 5. The Exorcist 1973 6. Alien 1979 7. Halloween 1978 8. Frankenstein 1931 9. Jaws 1975 10. The Shining 1980
Like it was said "impact on American cinema and popular culture.", not necessarily the best horror films made.
The AFI and the academy have always had a problem with not only horror but comedy as well. Both of these genres will go out of their way to be described as something else and it does make me sick.
Why is Romantic Comedy a genre and not just comedy? Because then you would have to introduce comedies from the last 25 years that are a little bit racier and therefore not pertaining to the gold standards of the screwball comedy heyday. And horror? I don't know what they are thinking not officially recognizing it as a genre, but when it comes to video rentals, and its the next highest genre rented behind porn, then all of a sudden its ok to consider it, just not awards time.
I find that very odd. To validate sci-fi and not horror is strange and certainly not accidental, on their part.
I was thinking the same thing- they can have a whole Sci-Fi category but no Horror category. Yes I'll admit that some horror films can be extreme, but that's what makes them worth watching and what makes the genre! I can't believe those catergories- Courtroom Drama- PAH-LEASE! I mean To Kill a Mockingbird is one of my favorites, but I wouldn't call it courtroom drama- drama would suit just fine! Fuck em'...
My top Ten, no particular order, just my faves: -Suspiria- Creepiest shit I've ever seen (shit not meaning bad, just using it as a general word) - The Last House on The Left - Halloween (Original) - Night of The Living Dead - Day of the Dead - The Exorcist- Some more creepy shit right there - The Silence of The Lambs- Although not typically Horror, it has it's creepiness to it - The Wicker Man (Original)- Terrorfying and creepy, what a delight! - Okay, I've drawn an akward blank and have to get to work! I'm such a dork!
