Topic: 5 Actual True Story Horror Movies

I despise True Story Horror Movies that end up being 90% B.S. Or in the case of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre pretty much near 100% crap. Don'T get me wrong I like the Texas Chainsaw Massacre but saying it is based on a true story is like saying The To...

Re: 5 Actual True Story Horror Movies

First off I agree with your choices and am a fan of those movies.  I do have a bit of an issue with the TCM being 100% BS.  I mean I think that is still closer to the 85% - 90%  , but that is just me being picky.:)  Nice write up.  I might've added Them (Ils) as well, but I can't argue with what you've included.

Re: 5 Actual True Story Horror Movies

i watched a fascinating documentary on the Texas Chainsaw Massacre and the real killer but your right im probly stretching... but then I probly am on a few of them smile Good choice on THEM as well.

Re: 5 Actual True Story Horror Movies

Thank you for putting From Hell in there! smile great list and agree that the BS with so many horror films claiming to be 'Based on..' does wear thin. I'm aware that From Hell is not completely true to the facts, how the hell can it be when we still don't know everything that happened, but it does merge a lot of the facts back then into the storyline. Love that movie and glad to see it getting some airtime.

Yes I have a fascination with the Jack the Ripper history, so what? tongue lol

The rest are awesome too so greatly compiled list big_smile

Re: 5 Actual True Story Horror Movies

thanks BTK. I also am a ripper fan.... From Hell was the best telling that i have seen so far.

Re: 5 Actual True Story Horror Movies

Deranged is one of the best I think.

Re: 5 Actual True Story Horror Movies

Borderland was not a good film for sure, but it reminds me of the Blue Oyster Cult song, Then Came the Last Days of May, a chiller of a tune.  I agree too that Zodiac was a real effective movie that didn't need to add anything to the truth to get scares.

Re: 5 Actual True Story Horror Movies

I'm on board with Deranged as well smile
the Tv movie To Catch A Killer (1992) about J.W. Gacy starring Brian Dennehy never gets any love, it's very well done
The Honeymoon Killers is another great flick which sticks solely to the details

Re: 5 Actual True Story Horror Movies

I 'm glad you put From Hell and especially Zodiac. I bought the 2 disc dvd and loved watching the documentaries about the whole Zodiac events and mystery of the suspect. Zodiac was probably one of the truest movies to be actually true to the events of real life and thought they did a great job still making it thrilling without altering the story like most based on true story films. Great Article Meh.

This article reminds me of the days when i was young and after watching TCM believing it was true. And when i was in my teens me and my friends would try to find the place where it happened relying on rumors where it was by other young people said that they have found the place. I think it wasn't till after buying the 2dsic TCM ( remake ) dvd and watching the making and documentaries i found out it was fake. I told my friends that and we all thought how dumb we was wasting all those driving hours trying to find it and asking people around thinking we were close. Now if some idiot teenager ask were TCM took place i'd just say what we were told back in the days, laughing as there driving off. lol

Re: 5 Actual True Story Horror Movies

I agree with those and loved From Hell. Another true movie that is worth the watch is Vampire Clan. It's from a true story as well. there is also Bully but it's not a horror movie...

Re: 5 Actual True Story Horror Movies

A few of the serial killer based films are fairly accurate and stay to the facts.
"Gacy", "Ted Bundy" and "Ed Gein" (Steve Railsback version not Kane Hodder)

Also Railsback in "Helter Skelter" and Van Bebber's "The Manson Family" cover Manson from two different angles pretty well.

Re: 5 Actual True Story Horror Movies

oh yes good call on GACY that one was scary as SHIT

Re: 5 Actual True Story Horror Movies

how could I forget The Manson Family!?  good call Wolph smile

Re: 5 Actual True Story Horror Movies

While From Hell is a pretty good movie, it does not even begin to do justice to how great the original comic by Alan Moore & Eddie Campbell is.  It's one of the best comics I've ever read and is totally based in reality (none of the psychic nonsense they added to Johnny Depp's character in the movie) and was thoroughly researched by Alan Moore, there is pages and pages of notes on where he gets his information from historical sources.  If you like the movie, do yourself a favor and give it a read.

Re: 5 Actual True Story Horror Movies

Hate comics mdc666 smile but I don't need that lol I have about 15 books about London and Jack the Ripper, folders with snippets of the murders back then and all the other things that make it such a rich history. Told ya I was obsessed tongue but that's my window into the real world of JTR

but thanks for the suggestion mcd666 big_smile

Re: 5 Actual True Story Horror Movies

Great list, My favorite from that list would have to be The Girl Next Door, it's an excellent movie(although disturbing) I also really enjoyed From Hell and I haven't seen borderland but by looking at the picture it looks pretty badass.

Re: 5 Actual True Story Horror Movies

Good list, I sitll like, what was mentioned above, Gacy, Gein, Bundy all those movies were soooo accurate and the actors even looked like the real guys, especially Gein.  Good list, however!

Re: 5 Actual True Story Horror Movies

Nice pull, Gacy was pretty out there.  Yeah, it's funny about TCM, my husband's from England, and was thoroughly convinced that it was totally based on fact, I had to let him in on the true events that inspired the movie, he was pretty disappointed.  I remember seeing Deranged at the drive-in with my big sis when I was a kid, and it scared the living shit out of me, I haven't seen it since, but still vividly remember the scene where the guy's feeding his mom the soup....ugh.  Haven't seen Girl Next Door, but I did see An American Crime, which was the same story, starring Ellen Page.  Such a sick bitch.

Re: 5 Actual True Story Horror Movies

I avoid true stories. It makes me feel like a voyeur and I am sensitive to the pain of others. With other horror knowing that its a story and acting prevents me from getting too uncomfortable. Although I am not a fan of torture porn in any films.   So I will keep to the purely fictional horror and leave real life to others.

Re: 5 Actual True Story Horror Movies

The Girl Next Door is fantastic. Interesting bit about truth behind Borderland. Dunno why people are praising Gacy; was totally horrible and the A&E special was scarier. Dahmer from 2002 was pretty awesome (can be found on youtube too).

Great article Meh!

The Girl Next Door is sadistic, disturbing and will have you locking your kids up if you have any.

I'm pretty sure that's what got them into trouble in the first place!  smile

Great article as always.

The Town that Dreaded Sundown - bad ass film about the true story of a serial killer known as the Phantom in Texarcana, Arkansas back in 1946. He killed like 7 people and was never known who he was. My avatar is a pic from the film too of the killer.

Deranged was such a bad movie acting wise but it really stuck to Ed Geins true life story well. I would love to see a remake but with better acting lol

Re: 5 Actual True Story Horror Movies

Did not know that Borderland was a true story, and I love that movie.  Sweet list.  The Girl Next Door was a fucked up movie, no doubt
