Re: campfire tale

The machine beeps and she hears her own voice saying she's not available and to leave a message.. Jenny walks over to the machine and listens..Her heart is beating wildly in her chest. She hears an electronic clicks , static and breathing. Then so softly ,an evil  laughter. and voice says ."  . . .jenny. .  . jenny....."  She rips the anwering machine off the table and throws it across the room. As if it were a snake and could bite her.. She plugs the phone into the wall and dials the police.  But all she hears is static . The phone is dead.  She hears the laughter again, She turns towards the diconnected answering machine.. She can't believe this is happening !  The laughter gets louder and she covers her ears..She then realizes that the laughter isn't coming from the machine. Its coming from the bedroom

Re: campfire tale

With those things lurking outside and in the hallway, flight wasn’t an option. She was still scared to death but now that there was no sanctuary in her home, fight was the decision. She went to the kitchen and grabbed a carving knife. Jenny turned and approached the bedroom door slowly. With knife in one hand she put her other on the bedroom door knob. no sooner the laughter subsided. She turned it and pulled her hand back fast as she pushed it the rest of the way open with her foot. The bedside light was on illuminating the room in a pale yellow.  She cautiously stepped further inside.

Sitting on the bed head hung low and smelling of rot was a corpse. An awful site it was but it wasn’t the only thing that made her eyes fill with tears of hopelessness and horror. Past the bed in the large window to her balcony, were terrible faces staring back at her.

Re: campfire tale

She screamed " What do you people WANT from me ???  "  they just stared blankly at her... Jenny was sobbing now.. The corpse sitting on the bed laughed softly..  Angered she rushed at it ,knife held upward, ready to stab down...  The corpse lifted its head , hair falling away from its face and looked at her..
She was staring at her own corpse... Jenny reeled .. The room spun..  The faces called out to her.. " Jenny.... Jenny....."

Re: campfire tale

Jenny collapsed on the floor. When she found the strength to raise her head and look around, the corpse and faces were gone. she felt she was losing her mind. She still felt terrified and needed something to feel normal, so she turned on the TV. Jenny flipped channels until she found the evening news. There was a feel good story about a charity walk that day then the announcer said "in sadder news, a local women was found dead on a downtown buss." to her amazement they were showing a clip of the same buss she was on, parked right where she got off. There was her driver being interviewed, behind him in the background men unloaded a gurney with a body under a white sheet. The news man said they believed it was natural causes and the woman’s name hasn’t been released until relatives were contacted. The body was found at 7:20 tonight. Jenny thought that was my buss she was there it couldn’t be.

Jenny ran out of her apartment past the thing she had seen in the hall earlier. Not willing to attempt the elevator, she ran down the stairs and out of the building. Outside it was humid and the smell of rot was lingering. She saw a cop sitting in his parked cruiser. She ran up to his window hysterical. He rolled down the window and asked if everything was all right in a gravelly voice. She pleaded for him to take her to a hospital, that she was having hallucinations. The cop put a mangled hand on the windowsill and opened the door. "Oh Jenny, a hospital cant help you now." The cop said while stepping out on to the street. Jenny screamed. he was huge, his lips were gone, teeth, and jaw protruding. His eyes red, dripping blood. "Why is it always a surprise to you people. When you die you don’t go to hell, it comes to you." The cop says while Jenny backs away screaming not noticing the hungry crowed gathering around her.

Re: campfire tale

**** Swollen  you are amaing !!  I was thinking of a very similar ending.. !!!!

Re: campfire tale

Jose hated his new job but he couldn’t let his little Emily down. It had been two weeks and everything was routine already. Man the register until one am then lock the front door and put the "back in thirty minutes" sign up so he could clean the rest rooms. Then back behind the counter until five thirty. After that count out his drawer and home to his little girl before trying to sleep.

Working the minimart graveyard shift out here on the highway had had a few perks. The only people that showed up before four am were there for gas and could pay at the pump. Which gave Jose a little break time, he spent a good amount of this in the back smoking, looking at the starry Washington state sky, and staring at the pine forest; which shadows held endless imaginary apparitions. And the job had a little excitement too, because sometimes he saw something else in the woods he was sure wasn’t shadows.

Re: campfire tale

Sometimes Jose would swear he heard noises in the woods nearby and at first he thought it was just bears, ..but the trash cans were never messed with like the bears and racoons sometimes tried . He always made sure to cover the trash , but sometimes passing motorists would leave wrappers thrown on the side. If it was bears the trash would have been devoured.. He was always curious to what was out there..but sometimes it made him very uneasy.. A feeling of being watched back..like right now..

Re: campfire tale

Jose knew it wasn’t his imagination this time. He took a drag of his smoke and walked past the dumpsters towards the woods. The security light above the back door only illuminated about five feet past the blacktop and the tree line was another five feet. It wasn’t a person because besides the minimart there was nothing out here for miles. As he got closer to the edge of the blacktop he stopped to let his eyes adjust. Something was moving out there, something big. Jose had seen and done things in his unguided youth, things that led to time in and out of jail and a short stay in prison. Other than losing custody of his daughter he thought nothing could scare him anymore. But when he heard a car pull up and a door open and shut he was a little reassured break was over.

Re: campfire tale

He walked back to the MiniMart and saw there was a young couple arriving. They bought gas and some supplies. They told him they were planning on camping out in the nearby woods as they traveled through to the next state.  Mike and Amy.  They were young ,  in love, and ready to take on life. Jose liked them immediately and wished he could re-do his youth , go back to start fresh like this with his ex. oh well, wishful thinking he supposed.
He was a little concerned about them camping nearby. With a bear or whatever it was that was out in the woods. He tried to talk them into going to the nice campgrounds 20 miles away..  He hoped they would heed his advice.. As he finished pumping their gas and wishing them a good-bye as they drove off,  he heard a loud crash out back..

Re: campfire tale

Jose went around back cautiously. The doors to the dumpster bin were open. About twenty feet away one of the dumpsters lay on its side as if it had been thrown.  Jose tried to lift it upright so he could roll it back. He was six foot, stocky, and strong but he couldn’t budge it an inch. He supposed the trash truck could use its forks and gave up. Nothing else was out of place so a bit bewildered he went back inside.

Later around four am he started prepping the coffee bar for the morning shift. He was supposed to trash the old pastries from the doughnut cabinet and hot products from the hotdog warmer. But when he got out back and saw the dumpster, he walked the bag containing yesterday’s food out to the tree line. He laid it down and went back in. He didn’t know if whatever was out there would want the stuff or get to it before something else did; better then tossing it he thought.

The next night after a smoke he went to see if the bag or anything was left to toss it in the trash. When he got to where he had left it the bag was gone and in its place an offering for Jose. It was the hindquarter of a deer and by the looks of it from the biggest buck in the forest. It was also very apparent it hadn’t been cut but ripped from the rest of the carcass.

Re: campfire tale

Jose picked it up and something told him he was being watched. he scanned the forest trees. So he carried the leg back in and wrapped it in newspaper... He heard a series of howls out further in the mountains.. It echoed through the trees..  He wasn't sure what was going on.. Just then he looked down at the newspaper he had used to wrap the leg..  There was a photo of the young couple he had seen the night before.  He took the bloody newapaper page and held it up to read.. The headline read : MAN AND WOMAN FOUND DEAD AT CAMPSITE: POSSIBLE BEAR ATTACK AUTHORITES WARN .

Jose read the article and felt his stomach turn.

Re: campfire tale

Jose finished wrapping up the leg and hid it under some cardboard in the dumpster. He didn’t want anyone asking questions about it, for no other reason than he didn’t have any answers. He felt bad about the campers but there wasn’t anything he could do now. If he told anyone about the freaky stuff going on they would just think he was crazy and probably still say it’s just a bear. He learned a long time ago minding your own business was a good policy to keep.   Needless to say he quit taking his breaks in the back and didn’t linger when taking out the trash. He still put the leftover food in the woods on occasion but did it with a throw now. Not daring to get to close but figuring if there was something out there he wanted to be on its good side.

About two weeks went by nothing particular happened, just the same soul sucking monotony of working the graveyard shift.  Until one Thursday night about three in the morning when a man in a ski mask came in and pointed a gun at him. Jose said "take whatever you want, Jack.  Don’t trip." Jose gave him the contents of the register all of thirty dollars. He demanded what’s in the safe. When Jose said he didn’t have access. The man said angrily "Mother fucker! Come with me prick." He led Jose around the back, had him get on his knees and put his hands on his head. The man then put his gun to Jose’s head. Jose thought of his daughter, suddenly there was a noise from the woods…

Re: campfire tale

Jose heard a loud crack of gunshot. He closed his eyes  and thought this is what its like to die.. he  felt the warm blood run down his neck. Oddly there was no pain. Jose opened his eyes. Thats when he saw the robber's decapitated head laying in front of him. Even through the eyeholes he could see a look of terror frozen on the man's face. He heard a grunt and jumped to the side as he witnessed the man's body being dragged into the edge of the woods by a large hairy shape ...
The next morning the sheriff deputies found the body in the woods, the money from the cash register still in the pockets. Another bear attack they said.
That night when Jose went to work he walked to the woods and  put out an offering of his own.

A fresh bowl of fruit.

Re: campfire tale

Emily never questioned her dad. She knew he did his best for her. He worked hard, saved, raised her to do what he said, not what he's done. Because he did, she got the scholarships and he is why she’s the women she is.  She never understood why he chose to carry on that damn graveyard shift after she became a successful lawyer; he could have retired. She figured he just had to earn his own. She also never understood why before the cancer took him he had asked her to put a grocery bag of fruit out here in the woods behind the old store. Or why it had to be only on Thursdays and only during the day. But if that’s what he wanted, she would. Because she loved her father and missed him very much.

Nice ending Swollen !

Re: campfire tale

The music was pounding . the kind of loud you felt reverberating in your lungs.  Flashing strobe lights and black lights. People pushed together like dancing sardines....But it still couldn't distract from the crumbling walls and stale stench of urine in  some corners. A rave at an abandoned warehouse..
Justin had gone to the rave downtown only because he had heard Amber was going to be there. And so she was.. beautiful, in a silver dress that barely covered her tanned perfect body..long slender arms wrapped around the DJ's neck..lips locked on his.
"Come on on Justin , "  he was slapped on the back by his best friend Mike " You never had a shot with her anyways, give up already and join the fun "   Mike pointed to two girls dancing smiling their way.. well, smiling at Mike's way.
Justin said " nah , man I think I'm going to go out for a smoke,"
"I dont think anyone in this place cares if you smoke indoors " Mike laughed.. He shook his head and  gave him a drink in a plastic cup. Justin sipped from  it and winced.  It was strong. He told Mike  " I just need some air "
He pushed his way through the crowds. trying to block the image of beautiful Amber with her arms around the DJ..He saw a back door open  , then  close and tried to make his way towards that corner of the building

Re: campfire tale

He is bumped back and forth through the crowd . He starts to feel a little dizzy and wonders vaguely what Mike gave him to drink. The strobe lights are getting to him and everyone seems to be slurring.. As he passes what he assumes is the bathrooms someone reaches out for him and grabs his shirt.. He pulls away. Suddenly he hears sirens and the police bullhorn telling everyone to stay where they are. The whole crowd roars in a panic and runs in every direction..  He is pushed against a wall and falls into a closet.  He feels something stinging his ribs and sees that there are scrathes in his shirt --all the way to his skin.. "what the fuck ?? " he says as the room spins and he passes out

Re: campfire tale

Justin wakes up and he doesn't know how much time has passed. He rubs his eyes and sits up. He remembers the rave and shakes his aching head.  Flicking on his lighter , he sees that he must have fell into a closet. there are dusty boxes piled next to him. Obviously left behind when this place went out of business..
Justin hears noises  in the building and remembers the cops. "Shit ! " he whispers as he tries to open the door and sneak out before they see him.. The place is deserted , plastic cups litter the floor and trash. He tries to stay next to the wall and not bump into anything. Its dark but he can make out shadows. He hears footsteps approaching from the next room and freezes. waiting for the police to come in.. but they don't. In fact there are no lights or the sounds of police radios. Puzzled, he wonders who is in here with him.. He opens his mouth the yell out hello..but stops....

Re: campfire tale

Justin kicked something odd. as his eyes adjust to the dark it appears that there’s more remnants of the party than plastic cups and used glow sticks. At first he thinks its just the shadows playing tricks. But just as fast as Justin bends over to pick it up, he drops it: he realizes it is a human hand. It occurs to him he didn’t want to know what the squishy bits were he had just been stepping on. Feeling a rush of panic he moves faster along the wall. Almost tripping over a bloody thigh, Justin covers his mouth to stop a "oh god" from escaping. He was sure now cops hadn’t been here and that he needed to get out without being noticed by whoever had.

Re: campfire tale

He noticed a flicker of light and realizes that a strobe light is still on in the next room. Justin crouches next to a table in order to not be seen. He hears movement in the next room and sees a figure pass by the hall.  A huge man, if you could call him that, at least 7 feet tall wearing a black butcher apron carrying what seemed to be a machete in one hand and a human leg in the other. But it wasn't just those images that shocked him. It was the things face ! He- or ' IT ' - had a bulging bald head with grey skin and a mouthful of jagged teeth. He turned to scan the room and Justin saw his eyes. They were red. Seeing the blood soaked figure standing there with the strobe light flashing behind him made Justin shake with fear.

Re: campfire tale

The thing turned and continued down the hall. Justin saw movement out of the corner of his eye. It was Amber !  she saw him and started to crawl for him. She was crying.  " Justin ! whats going on ? I was.. dancing ...and people started ..screaming . ..and the blood... " she whimpered and held on to him. Justin stroked her blood soaked  hair.  " shhhhhh  . We have to keep quiet and find a way out . "

Re: campfire tale

There was a crunch noise to Amber’s side she jumped and clinched Justin’s arm. They both looked to see a grotesque sight. On the floor a few feet from Amber was a bloody torso. All over it were creatures that looked like giant pill bugs. They were devouring it, some from the inside visibly moving under the skin. "What the hell are those things" Amber whispered. Nausea enveloped Justin, he held the puke back; this was survival now.  He had to decide: did he attempt the dark garbage and creature strewn floor to find another exit or try to sneak past the butcher.

Re: campfire tale

Amber gripped his hand tightly. "Im scared Justin ."  she cried softly  One of the pit bull things looked in their direction and growled. ..  But then the hellhound was distracted by of a slab flesh trhrown in front of it  by the Butcher and continued eating. When Amber saw the Butcher enter the room she would have screamed out loud if Justin didnt have the foresight to clamp his hand over her mouth. He could feel her body stiffen with terror.  She pulled away from him in a panic and scrambled under a nearby table. The Butcher saw her.

Re: campfire tale

The Butcher crosses over to where Amber is hiding and tosses the table aside. He grabs her by the hair and yanks her up to his face. A long black tongue slithers out of his mouth as he licks her face. Amber squirms and yells. Justin can't take anymore and rushes the Butcher with a chair. The Butcher flings him aside like a rag doll into the hallway > He passes by him as he carries Amber to the next room. Justin closes his eyes and awakens to the sounds of Amber's screams
He stumbles to the doorway and sees the butcher ripping out her intestines and pulling her organs out. Amber gurgels blood and  then stares at him blankly... She is dead.. the Butcher removes her necklace and wraps it around his wrist as some sort of trophy.  Then throws her broken body into a heap of other bodies strewn around the room.
Justin picks up a cleaver from the floor.

Re: campfire tale

Justin comes up from behind without hesitation and brings the cleaver down into the butcher’s thick skull. Bringing the fiend to its knees in front of Justin, the blade deeply wedged in. With a bit of effort he retrieves the cleaver and continues, each blow releasing easier and easier and flinging thick black blood.  He doesn’t stop until the creature finally drops forward out of Justin’s reach.

Splatters of the butcher’s blood that landed on the pile of corpses begin pooling together. A gelatinous black blob squirms its way down into the heap out of sight. Startling Justin the whole mound begins quivering violently.
