Re: What R U Reading?

A couple books that I'm reading at the moment:

Xenophon: Conversations of Socrates (includes the books: Secrates' Defence, Memoirs of Socrates, The Dinner-Party, The Estate Manager). I was a bit disappointed to learn in the dry, boring introduction that Xenophon has made Socrates a more orthodox, conservative "this-is-how-it-is" thinker, and even goes as far as to place his own biases and philosophies into Socrates' mouth. Plato's writings on Socrates, I have now learned, is the writings that I will probably enjoy more. The introduction to each story is very...what I would call, "Oxford dry". So I've put it down. I might pick it back up later.

The Invisible Landscape: Mind Hallucinogens and the I Ching by Terence & Dennis Mckena
Now THIS book is going to be a trip! The first 30 pages have been great.

Re: What R U Reading?

Breakfast of Champions: Kurt Vonnegut

Re: What R U Reading?

Finished Mandela and man, what an amazing book that was. Truely someone to to look up too even if he's dead. Such an amazing story. Brutal and very touching.

Very cool pick, UD. Breakfast of Champions is one of my favorite books! It's been so long since I last read anything of Vonnegut...I'm kind of hoping somebody just gives me a Vonnegut book for Christmas. If not, I'm going to have to buy a volume of his work off of Amazon or something. He's such a great writer, and a great man as far as I can tell.

Punk, what better way to honor the man than reading his book. Nicely done.

Re: What R U Reading?

The Invisible Landscape: Mind Hallucinogens & The I Ching by Terence & Dennis McKenna.
Not as fun of a read as I thought it would be, but I plowed through it anyway. Some parts of the book were great, very interesting and enlightening to think about, and yet other parts were very dense and technical and full of chemical terminology/jargon that no would understand unless they have some sort of background in chemistry. So much so that I actually got frustrated at it. Never have I wanted to throw a book across the room as much as this one, but I restrained myself and plowed through chapter after chapter. But the few beginning and ending chapters were very good. So, if you're ever going to read Terence McKenna's work, definitely start out with either Food of the Gods or True Hallucinations, both of which are fantastic books.

Re: What R U Reading?

Man Gaiman is just freaking GOD!!!

Moody has a pretty dry writing style, but it's still quite interesting.

Re: What R U Reading?

Yes I did just a fantastic very intense story. Chacters are so well put up. But the atmosphere man, woah. Not only the beginning like I said previously but the whole 326 pages. Very entertaining. smile

Re: What R U Reading?

The Road to Eleusis: Unveiling the Secrets of the Mystery by Gordon Wasson, Albert Hoffman, and Carl A. P. Ruck.

A fascinating book hypothesizing as to what the infamous Kykeon concoction at the ancient Greek city of Eleusis really could have been composed of.

Man Vertigo comics rule them ALL!!! big_smile

Re: What R U Reading?

^ Cool, sir. Once I'm done wading myself through thousands of pages of all the books I'll be reading in 2014, I'll make my way over the comic books again. Comics are such a cool and enjoyable art form...a merging of visual artwork and reading/literacy skills for the audience.
Last comic books I remember reading were a collection of early 90's "Shadowhawk' issues. Love that character...

Re: What R U Reading?

Ohhh nice one Shadowhawk is.

Yeah been reading comics all my life. Every time we were travelling my asshole father [which wasn't in these days] used to grab 2 boxes full of them for my bro and me. Damn I've read so much in that Orange VW Westfalia I can assure you. So much that my parents had trouble getting my bro and myself out to go visit Museums, parks and stuff. lol

Re: What R U Reading?

Do give books - religious or otherwise - for Christmas. They’re never fattening, seldom sinful, and permanently personal.

Seems the ones that gave you them as gifts read this thing. big_smile

Re: What R U Reading?

^ Nice quote. Perhaps they did, or perhaps they just knew I'm a book freak!

Now reading...Player Piano by Kurt Vonnegut.
