Re: A Serbian Film

I always find these arguments interesting, being an indie movie maker myself. I made a movie about Aborted babies coming back to kill the people responsible for the ones who did the deed. I've received emails from male sexists, feminists, right to life advocates, pro-abortion supporters, and even from a plumber telling me it's impossible to flush a dead baby down a toilet.

They missed the point. Poor things. I am not anti-abortion. But I am anti-waste, anti-pain, and anti-self-brutalization.

Now I've heard a ton about Serbian Film, haven't seen it yet, but I will. I'm not bothered by things I see in movies, I'm pretty tough skinned. But when something does come out that manages to get under my skin (like Irreversible) I can do nothing but applaud, becuase it's just a movie...it's all tricks and the fact that they can utterly make your soul hurt is not something easy to do and the BALLS on these guys. It's incredibly brave to put something like this on the screen.

In todays world, to get peoples attention you've GOT to do something like this, John Waters had Devine eat a peice of shit at the end of Pink Flamingos, these guys are just making their mark.

I can't comment too much on the merits of the film, because I haven't seen one second of it, but the only thing that will keep me from liking it is if it's nothing but darkness. See I don't watch horror movies to see people die...I watch horror films to see people live...to see them survive through the darkness, to see prove that you can go through hell and come out the other side. I don't like Halloween to see Myers kill ppl, I watch to see that girl fight back, I watch The Exorcist to see the battle of wills, I like the final chases in the F 13's, the booby trapped ending in NOES, the insane escape in Hostel, or Ash climbing out that cellar in Evil Dead 2. I'm not saying the movie has to end happily, but give me something to root for and I'm all good, even if it doesn't have a happy ending.

But in the end....

it's just a movie.

Re: A Serbian Film

Well said Sonny!  What you said about 'seeing people live', is what I love too!  Definately watch this film.  Apart from controversy, had some flaws that stood out for me.  I can't say much about the movie without including SPOILERS.

Re: A Serbian Film

I saw the movie
....
.......
Ok the movie wants to be a complaint of some extremists in today's cinema, gender violence, especially I think the director is referring to that genre is called "snuff "....
I'm too disgusted and disgusted to comment ......

Re: A Serbian Film

I got to thinking that back in the 70's all the movies of that time like Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Eaten Alive and Last House on the Left that I'm sure were banned in one country or another when they first came out, we always hear were influenced by the Vietnam War and were a reflection of that time.
Now this movie was made in Serbia, by Serbs.  A country that not that long ago, 15-20 years ago suffered civil war, genocide, and ethnic cleansing where upwards of 100,000 people died.  Now I know we live in the United States of Amnesia where nobody knows whats happening right now when it comes to current events let alone what happened a couple of years ago.  But come on, I know all this violence happened before 9/11, but you can't tell me nobody remembers that the United States and NATO led a bombing campaign that lasted a couple months as a result of all this violence just a little over a decade ago.  That Clinton guy was still President and getting blowies from Monica Lewinsky, it  wasn't all that long ago.  According to NATOs website there are 10,000 troops still occupying Kosovo.
IMBD says the director of this movie is 34.  That's a year older than me.  So while I was going to high school, he was living through some shit.  And most of the people who would want this movie censored were busy watching Pokemon, collecting pogs or jerking off to Baywatch in the 90s, the director of this movie was living through a hell that you all can never imagine.  So I can't help but think that the realities these filmmakers lived through heavily influenced this movie the same way the classics in the 70s that were banned were influenced by the violence of their time.

Re: A Serbian Film

I have NOT seen the film, but like you mdc I did some research and read a couple reviews for it, from what I understand the director does a good job getting his point across but after that it just turns into strait torture porn, some people said the movie was simply silly and cheesy. I have nothing against the film being made, but I have no interest in seeing a baby being molested nor an adolesent child. Defend it all you want but IMO that's just sick. On the other hand this not the first film do deal with such subject matter (The Girl Next Door, An American Haunting) but they were done tastfully. I'm not interested in seeing who can can who raise the bar to the level. Because even if there is political undrtones and there is a message the filmaker is trying to get across your kidding yourself if you think that's what this movie is about.

Re: A Serbian Film

There are different ways of doing things, you could easily shoot the same scenes in different ways.
If their wish was to criticize, denounce, in a "metaphorical and artistic" the situation of the country could choose to repeat it ... a different way.
The film is nothing but a legal snuff, where scenes of rape against a child just given birth, the mother's legs apart while smiling (while you hear screaming "pornography newborn and the future") and the rape of a child (pardon the sodomizing rape) made by his father ....
not be art and film it ....
The "lighter items" throughout the film, where words are no longer needed, is when the hero kills a bad strokes of the penis in the hole of the eye.
You could avoid the scenes with children ...

Sorry for my bad English.

English is not my native language.

Re: A Serbian Film

I still think the film maker's main intention was to be just as audacious as possible

I've been meaning to do an in-depth overview and pontification on this film but I've read most of the people's reactions to it around here and have held back just knowing I'd be dragged through the mud for championing it in certain ways.  I love to be in opposition of popular opinion and to debate, but I don't think there's too much room for changing anyone's views on this one so I might save those pontifications for my blogspot just for posterity's sake. and after all the posts I've made here on the subject, I guess so much for all that! LOL

This is a film version of the joke The Aristocrats

Re: A Serbian Film

I never said the movie was a metaphor for anything.  I was saying that it doesn't surprise me that a movie that is so controversial was made in a country that went through such violence.  And I'm sure to the filmmakers who lived through the real thing for over a decade, to them the movie probably isn't shocking.

sounds like a scary movie

I think what affected me most about the film was the depravity of the newborn scene and  film left me feelings so desolute ..

Right, and you bring up a good point. Sorry i only meant to reference your post by simply saying that i, like you, researched the film and the story behind the story. The rest of my post was not directed at your comments directly.

Pretty much.

Re: A Serbian Film

What you said is a real good point about the country the director is from.
But I say anything goes no matter where you are on this planet. If you need to express something thru film that the majority will think is wrong, fuck them all! Freedom is suppose to be freedom to write and film anything even if most people think it's disgusting.
There are people out here that will pay for it...

Re: A Serbian Film

We should get together and make a film where people with tracheotomies get raped by 5 year old transsexuals who are force fed Viagra infused Ovaltine. I'd also like to see people with Down's Syndrome shit on by paraplegic bomb victims from the Middle East wars and Osama Bin Laden is elected president of the US and re-instates slavery. Women who get raped in his society are beheaded after they have their clitoris chewed off by starving children in the Sudan. Come on Horror Movies . Ca.... finance my film, since so many people feel we have the right to see anything. If this were true I could tell Moderators here to fuck off and that I am going to rape their unborn children someday when I cut them open and gut fuck the fetus.

THE REALITY IS..... these things are NOT acceptable, and just because I can say them and have the money to put them on film does not give me the right. It wouldn't make me a visionary, an artist, or individual justifying sick delusions through the illusion of political motive or agenda.

It would just make me a sicko, someone attempting to shock, and get me arrested or kicked off HM.CA.

Freedom of Speech is an illusion.
The only rights you have are rights someone has given you until they want to take them away.
And any line drawn________________ Can be crossed , ignored, or justified.

All reality is a matter or perspective, and the rights and morals and laws of that reality change from person to person and their differing perspectives.

The best argument by the person with the most power wins. And right now it isn't you or me.

Re: A Serbian Film

A sicko is just alright for me. If you put what you said on celluloid then that's all the best. Even tho you didn't put your heart into it, it's too late now the damage is done. Now WE got it and the mothers against whatever will have a field day and the freaks will rejoice!
