Topic: Captain America: The First Avenger (July, 2011)

First there was Iron Man.  Next up is Thor, to be followed soon thereafter by ol' Wing Head himself, Captain America, as we approach the Avengers movie in 2012.

Chris Evans stars as Steve Rogers, a poor boy from 1940s Brooklyn repeatedly refused admission into the service due to his sickly, fragile build.  But so determined is he to fight for his country against the genocidal Nazis that he partakes in an experiment which transforms him into the peak of human physical perfection.  As director Joe (The Wolf Man, The Rocketeer) Johnson puts it, imagine the best Olympic athlete -- the fastest runner, the strongest weightlifter, the world's best fighter -- that, plus 50%, and you've got Captain America.

I'm sure no one here but me is excited about this flick (nerd that I am) but this movie is showing massive potential to be one of the great superhero movies.  Particularly considering fan favorite and movie bad guy supreme Hugo Weaving is playing Cap's arch-nemesis, the insidious Red Skull, head of Hitler's advanced weapons program, and leader of the terrorist outfit, Hydra.

These following pics have been floating around for a few months now, but I thought I'd go ahead and post them here since I don't see another thread for the film.  The very last picture is the one most recently released, of Evans in full Captain America costume -- and he looks BAD ASS!

No Lon your not the only comic nerd here buddy! I'm also really excited for the Capt America movie as well as the Avengers. Both of these flicks are gonna kick ass!!

Re: Captain America: The First Avenger (July, 2011)

Yeah I can't tell you how long I've been waiting for an actual Capt. America movie (no, the 70's made for TV movie starring Reb Brown don't count, nor does that 80's movie with Matt Sallinger). I watch, or play, anything comic book related, but Cap has always been one of my fav's. I'm even putting together a WW2 Cap suit. Anyway, nice to see that I too am not the only comic nerd on here.

Re: Captain America: The First Avenger (July, 2011)

I saw a production sheet recently for The Avengers which lists Ant-Man and Wasp as characters (though no actors names were attached).  See for yourself:

Re: Captain America: The First Avenger (July, 2011)

I've never liked Cap, even when I was a kid...I always hated the boy scout attitude, the villians, and especially those lame little wings (I had the same issue with Namor too). As I grew up and my casual interest in comics turned to obsession I started learning everyones backstories, both fictional and real world, and I began to have a respect and admiration for the character. Hell, I even found myself rooting for him during the whole "Civil War" event where he and half of the Marvel Universe both good and bad went up against Tony Stark's ego and the other half....but I never liked the man. That being said, I can't wait for this movie. I know I won't like it. I know that, just like any other comic book movie, I will pick it apart. But I will still go see it and give it support because, after all, he is one of the classics that gave birth to the fantasy world my mind oft resides in...and without the Cap there would be no Avengers, and Joss Whedon is directing that!

(And yes, I do know that Cap was NOT in the original Avengers line up and didn't join them until issue #4 but, as they've often stated, he is the heart and soul of the team.)

Re: Captain America: The First Avenger (July, 2011)

I'm a huge Punisher fan myself.

Re: Captain America: The First Avenger (July, 2011)

^^ you shoud track down and read Garth Ennis' "The Punisher Kills The Entire Marvel Universe" it's one of the funniest one-shots ever!

a yes and a lol

Re: Captain America: The First Avenger (July, 2011)

I'll probably end up watching this because I love comic books and most the movie's they make from them but, I'm waaaaay more excited to see Thor.  Thor's story seems alot more interesting than the Captain's to me.

The Red Skull concept pics look promising.

Re: Captain America: The First Avenger (July, 2011)

Reading an article it says when Weaving's in skull make-up (prosthetics, not a mask) his nose is painted black so they can remove it digitally in post.  So like a real skull, he'll have an empty nose cavity -- which is going to look friggin' RAD.

We can also look forward to the CA:TFA one-sheet this Friday, and a 30 second teaser on Sunday during the Super Bowl.

Re: Captain America: The First Avenger (July, 2011)

Is Bucky in the film?

Re: Captain America: The First Avenger (July, 2011)

In the last pic above, that's Bucky standing to Cap's left.  He's not so much a boy sidekick in this as a fellow soldier he becomes good friends with.

Incidentally, a couple more pics recently released:

Re: Captain America: The First Avenger (July, 2011)

Bucky was in a shot with Cap as well. I can't wait for this. I've been waiting since I was a kid. Again, the two made for TV movies starring Reb Brown and the 1991 feature don't count.

Re: Captain America: The First Avenger (July, 2011)

Latest news is that the actual theatrical trailer for Captain America: The First Avenger will likely play this coming Friday...before the latest Nicolas Cage sure-to-be-turd Drive Angry.

But, no accounting for taste...

Re: Captain America: The First Avenger (July, 2011)

Couldn't they have found someone in good shape to play Captain America?  I mean c'mon...Evans has to have at least 6 - 7% body fat.  big_smile

Lon...Cage is an icon.  He has had some of the greatest movies ever.  It will take more than a decade of bad (although a lot of people like National Treasure 1 and 2) movies before it can be assumed he will have a bad movie.  Yeah...that prob will suck though.  smile  Still...He is one of the greatest.

Re: Captain America: The First Avenger (July, 2011)

Oh, I totally agree.  Raising Arizone, Kiss of the Vampire, Wild at Heart, Leaving Las Vegas, Peggy Sue Got Married, Kick-Ass...some of my favorite Cage performances.

I do my best to forgive him his indiscretions but it's a real effort these days.  Bangkok Dangerous, Season of the Witch, Next, Ghost Rider, Sorcerer's Apprentice, Wicker Man, Knowing...  Dude seems to have forgotten how to turn down a bad script.

Re: Captain America: The First Avenger (July, 2011)

Valley Girl, Honeymoon in Vegas, The Rock, Birdy, Red Rock West, Con Air, Snake Eyes, 8MM, Kiss of Death...all solid Flicks IMO.

Of course, like in your post,  Wild at Heart is prob best.  Kiss of the Vampire underrated.  Remember the "Too Late" part he does, as he's yellin at the secretary while standin on his desk...true Cage fashion.  Hilarious.

Re: Captain America: The First Avenger (July, 2011)

Loved him in Kiss of Death.  I didn't list all the movies I liked him in because I was in a hurry to get to my point ( lol ) but I also liked Guarding Tess, Red Rock West, Birdy, Valley Girl and 8mm -- to an extent.  He was very good in it but I think the screenplay let him down.

I also liked him in Face/Off.  Nicolas Cage playing John Travolta playing Nicolas Cage.  That bit early on where he head bangs -- classic Cage.

Re: Captain America: The First Avenger (July, 2011)

Finally, a newly released image of Hugo Weaving in full-on Red Skull get-up:

Re: Captain America: The First Avenger (July, 2011)

Now that's how I picture the Red Skull to a tee. The costume looks pretty damn sweet too. I like how it's laced in red. Thanks and keep us posted, Lon.
