It's based off an old comic title, John Carter of Mars. Not sure why they dropped the "of Mars."

I wonder if they wanted to disassociate it from Mars needs moms. Which was a big flop for them.

Actually Lon it's based on the Barsoom series of books by Edgar Rice Burroughs. There has already been a movie made based on the first one, A Princess of Mars, it was awful (the movie not the novel) avoid if you can.
