Topic: British Horror Films!

Hi guys,

Some of the best horror movies ever created are British! Whether they were simply filmed in England, like An American Werewolf In London or are British themselves, there's so many fantastic horror movies to talk about! So here's a thread for just that...

There was a time when the UK where at the peak of horror cinema. During the 60-70s, Hammer Horror, Amicus and even Tigon were making horror films at a huge speed - some of which have since become genre classics! With films like 28 Days Later, Shaun Of The Dead, The Descent, Creep, The Woman In Black and the new film The Facility, British Horror is definitely making a big come back. Don't forget, where would horror be without Christopher Lee, Peter Cushing or Vincent Price?!

So, what are your favourite British horror movies of all time?

Check out https://www.thinglink.com/scene/386898301816930306 for a VERY cool interactive timeline of the best British horror movies.

Re: British Horror Films!

Oh I LOOOVE British Horror.
Aside Descent and Creep that you listed, my favorites are Dog Soldiers and Dead Outside but let's not forget The Haunting, Hellraiser, Resident Evil, Eden Lake and The Entity.

But SEVERANCE is the best ever.

Bloodbath at the house of death.

Re: British Horror Films!

I'll throw my favourite Hammer into the bunch, I love The Devil Rides Out. Also good call on Severance Punk, one of the best horror comedies ever made. The Descent too is one of the scariest movies to hit film, I loved it as well. Also interesting to see Dead of Night as first on your list FreakOfCinema, is it really the first british horror movie? If so that's a hell of a way to start, a fantastic movie that set the stage for anthologies to come. Lot's of great british horror movies throughout the ages.

Tormented (2010)
Attack the Block
Doghouse
Shaun of the Dead
Inbred
Eden Lake
Dog Soldiers
The Descent
Peeping Tom
Fright

Re: British Horror Films!

Punk, Eden Lake is certainly in some of the top brutal films I've seen.  Of course not the most but it has such a solid cast and story  and presentation that it doesn't really have the sometimes snuff feeling of other such movies.  My dad hates horror movies but if they have a good story, he'll let me recommend movies to him and he'll watch.  When I rented Saw back when it came out, he was talking about that for months.  Eden Lake is one that he let me have him see and he loved it.  He is a cop and the movie he said was very accurate and even scarier because that stuff happens all the time.

Re: British Horror Films!

Oh yes I bet it's really accurate, we hear sick stories like this in the news often. And man, Kelly was so perfect in this role, amazing. I love that girl, she was also great in Sherlock Holmes.

Re: British Horror Films!

it is scary how messed up things are getting in the news.  I know people have always been and done twisted things but it just seems there's more of it being reported now.

If you think about all those stories about guys locking up girls for ten years, like the recent case in the news is stuff almost straight out of horror cinema e.g Jennifer Lynch's Chained.

Re: British Horror Films!

^^^
Stiil gotta see this one. I enjoyed Surveillance a lot so I can't wait.

Re: British Horror Films!

There has been a lot of good stuff that has come out recently as well.

Isolation
Citadel
Kill List
Little Deaths
MindFlesh
Burke and Hare
Stormhouse
Exhibit A
The Awakening
Piggy
Entity
The Devil's Business
When the lights went out
The Possession of David O'Reilly
Tony
Harold's going stiff
Stitches
Comedown
Storage 24
Sightseers
Mum and Dad
Cockneys vs Zombies

Re: British Horror Films!

The Descent was always one of my favorites. I use to live around a lot of caves that people sometimes got lost in and never quite made it out of, so it always stuck with me.

Re: British Horror Films!

Yeah Descent is great. Love the second one too.

VERY COOL list alien. Very few I saw so I'll save this in a text file and check them out. Saw Citadel, Entity and The Devil's Business.

I'll had some old school ones.
Burn Witch Burn and The Stone Tape.

Personally I though Mindflesh was abysmal. a 0.005/10 for me. A total mess of a film.

To each his own Vas.  I didn't think it was a great flick but it was a trip.
