Topic: Argh, trying to I.D an obscure horror movie from my childhood

Hey all smile

I'd like to apologise if i should be asking this in the "Name That Horror Film" thread, but it seemed to me that it was more a game/trivia thing.

Back in the mid 90's, i remember hiring myself an old horror film that was one of the only movies to really make me feel uneasy to sit through. I was allowed to watch whatever i wanted (as long as it wasn't porn ... *sigh* ) and the owner of the video store knew my family, so i pretty much had free reign of the store tongue I'd like to have it off of my mind and finally find out what the bloody film was called haha

Now with what i actually DO remember. The basic premise to the movie was a Circus Performer would bring up kidnapped victims on the stage and murder/torture them as entertainment. The thing was, the customers all thought it was an act and marveled at how real it looked.

I think it was in black and white?, even in the mid 90's i would have classed it as an "Old Movie", so it was either black and white or had a really poor post colour conversion going on. It also definitely wasn't a "Hollywood" production and really felt dark and filthy, like i shouldn't be watching this.

I've spent almost 2 hours prior to writing this post searching for the damn thing, but when you have search terms such as "horror film murder stage real circus", you tend to get some pretty bizarre stuff being returned haha

Thanks for anyone who read this far and is trying to help me out! I'll make sure to let everyone know if i DO find it, as if my memories are anything to go by (and not just my nostalgia clouding my judgement) it should be a pretty good flick smile

I think T-Dog nailed it with The Wizard of Gore (1970) (IMDB link)

Wizard of Gore trailer (YouTube link)

YouTube full movie link.

I have to agree it does sound like Herschell Gordon Lewis's Wizard of Gore.  Circus of Fear also popped in my head but I don't think there were any torture scenes.

It could be Joel M
Reeds Bloodsucking Freaks (1976)

^^^ That's the one I was going to say as well.  But Wizard of Gore fits the description, too.
