Topic: best sports rivalries

Today is Ohio State vs Michigan (GO BUCKEYES!!!)

What is your favorite rivalry in sports or what do you think is the best rivalries?

Re: best sports rivalries

The best that ever existed was in hockey during the 80s, Montreal Canadians and Quebec Nordiques. That was so sick how every game between these 2 were almost riots.

And the teams really hated each other, proof in the famous Good Friday Brawl.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=veX55rLYAgQ

But nowadays I'll say my 2 favorite Football teams one against each other, the Pats and the Ravens. Such a blast. big_smile

Re: best sports rivalries

Pros: (MLB) Boston Red Sox vs  N.Y Yankees.
         (NBA) Celtics vs Lakers.
         (NFL) Bears vs Packers.
(NHL) Montreal Canadiens vs. Toronto Maple Leafs

College: (basketball) Duke vs N.C.
              (football) Auburn vs Alabama.

My personal favorite is: (NFL) San Diego Chargers vs Oakland Raiders

Man that is out of control.

A few rivalries from MMA:

Sakuraba vs. The Gracie clan

The Gracies are known for starting the UFC and revolutionizing MMA as well as inventing Brazilian jiu-jitsu.

Sakuraba is a japanese pro-wrestler with very unorthodox fighting and excellent grappling.

After a 90 minute fight, the longest in modern MMA (since 1993 UFC and Pancrase's inception), Royce Gracie, undefeated former UFC champ, threw in the towel after a tremedous volume of leg kicks from Sakuraba.

After Royce was defeated, his much vaunted brother Renzo challenged Sakuraba, and lost.

After Renzo and Royce, was their cousin Ryan, a much larger opponent than the previous Gracies and a good 20 pounds heavier than Saku. Who was also defeated.

Saku defeated all three Gracies in 2000.

It was 7 years later the time for the legend Royce Gracie to return and avenge the Gracie name. And he did, that is until it was revealed that he tested positive for anabolic steroids after the fight.

Finally in 2010 a battered and bruised 41 year old Sakuraba fought fresh faced 25 year old Ralek Gracie and was defeated legitimately by decision after 15 minute fight.

Another huge martial arts rivalry was Luta Livre and Brazilian jiu-jitsu (created by the aforementioned Gracie family). The rivalry culminated in many live no holds barred events, long before MMA or UFC existed, as well as many street brawls and gym fights. At the live events there would pretty much always be huge brawls from supporters in the crowd. One of the most extreme events was the aforementioned Renzo Gracie being stabbed with a knife through the cage ring while in a fight.

Which ultimately lead to a large MMA rivalry between gyms which were based more in either Luta Livre or Jiu-jitsu. The gyms were Brazilian Top Team (the Gracie Jiu-jitsu specialists) and Chute Boxe (Luta Livre/Muay Thai) this resulted in many bloody battles and war of words in and out of the ring, including many of the best fights in MMA history. Brazilian Top Team was founded by MMA pioneers Mario Sperry and Murilo Bustamante, some of the more famous fighters were the Nogueira Brothers, Ricardo Arona, Vitor Belfort, and Paulo Filho. Chute Boxe's crew held fighters such as Wanderlei Silva, Pele, the Ruas brothers and Anderson Silva.

Ultimately though the rivalry simmered down and many of the former rivals ended up training together and actually reaching even higher heights than previously. The Nogueira bros formed a team called Blackhouse which featured Anderson Silva, Mauricio Rua, and the Nog bros themselves, as well as many other brazilian MMA fighter such as Lyoto Machida.

Yeah I remember Gracie peeps but I never took much attention to this so your post was definitely a great and interesting read. THANK YOU!!! smile

Re: best sports rivalries

^ Gracie Killer.  I was a pretty big MMA fan in the early 90's.  Went away from it, then back, now away again.  Nice post Theli, brought back some memories.

Some good ones mentioned here.

To the NHL, more recently I'd add Detroit and Colorado.  Pittsburgh and Phily.

NFL - Dog already mentioned the greatest ever, My Pack and the Bears.  I'd add Dallas and San Fran.  Manning and Brady.

Re: best sports rivalries

^ A Ty Domi reference!  I remember when Ty Domi was with Toronto, and was in the penalty box.  A fan was acting like a jack azz, and they got in a fight.  The fan got their nose broke (deservedly so).  Then the fan wanted to sue Ty, and was whining on the press.  Ty had a news conference and had to apologize to the fan and shake hands.

The reason I bring this up (aside from you reminding me of it), is I always thought, if that was me...first of all I wouldn't of been acting like that fan.  However, if I was, and if I got my nose broke by Ty...I woulda been like - Dude!  I got my nose broke by Ty Domi!  Sweet!  Then I would of apologized to him and admittedly would have milked it a bit and asked for some free tickets and that woulda been the end of it.

If you act like a bi**h...don't be pissed if someone gets sick of it and does that.

WORd!!! big_smile

Re: best sports rivalries

Outside College Football, I don't know much about sports. Alabama vs. Auburn rivalry is just pure and simple insanity. Luckily only one person was killed over the game this year.

Re: best sports rivalries

I'm glad you guys mentioned Michigan/Ohio State.  Truly one of the oldest and most heated rivalries.  So upset that my Michigan lost to such a bad call.  sad

Re: best sports rivalries

Ty Domi was the man, even played here in Peg City for a little while. Got a hockey stick signed by him and the rest of the Jets at the time.
