Topic: Why Eli Roth Left 1408
MoviesOnline sat down with the stars and producers of 1408 and one of the very interesting things that came out of the interview was WHY Eli Roth left the 1408 project. They asked about Eli's take on 1408 and Di Bonavaentura said the following: ... Read More : Why Eli Roth Left 1408
Re: Why Eli Roth Left 1408
Okay I have read the story and it's really more of a ghost story than a gorefest. I couldn't really see Roth doing this kind of movie in all honesty.

Re: Why Eli Roth Left 1408
Cause they saw Roth's films and knew that he sucked so they let him go, lol.
Re: Why Eli Roth Left 1408
Hostel 2 was brilliant. I wanted to watch it again right after I saw it. And I am working on converting a Roth hater to a Roth fan. And you are next Ripper.

Re: Why Eli Roth Left 1408
Actually Roth doesn't like the term "Torture Porn" he doesn't love it.. He actually does some pretty interesting things in his films but people just can't get past the gore.. I do think he needs to move away from it to show people he has more in his bag of tricks so people will stop refering to him in negative terms.. Roth I think is trying to bring back the days when horror was fun.. not really scary.. The 80s.. You could go see most horror flicks from the 80s and it was just a party.. No one makes those kind of films anymore.. Hostel Part II definetly brought more of that back.. It wasn't as serious as I think the first one was..
Re: Why Eli Roth Left 1408
That's funny Goon. In one of the Chicago papers, the critic called Hostel: Part II 'Torture Pornography.'

Yea, alot of critics don't understand horror.. or anything that isn't going to be nominated for an Oscar or an Emmy..

He loves gore and keeping things kind of funny but he doesn't like the term "Torture Porn" because its a negative term used to just put down his film.. It's just a cop out for critics to call it that..
Re: Why Eli Roth Left 1408
Yeah i know exactly and that critic gave Hostel: Part II zero stars. And if my memory serves me correctly, it could of been about the same amount of starts from Hostel. That's why i can't stand critics. I don't listen to whatever they have to say. I could careless how many stars you give a horror movie or thumbs up or down. All that matters is what the viewer thinks. If you want to see a horror movie and think it looks good then go see it. You are your own critic. A critic could never change my mind about a movie if i already want to see it.

Re: Why Eli Roth Left 1408
You say that roth hasnt made a thought provoking film. Hostel has to be one of the most original thought provoking films in a very long time. I mean the idea of 'normal' ppl paying to kill people in a room cos hookers etc arnt enough is awesome, disturbing and thought provoking at the same time

Re: Why Eli Roth Left 1408
Torture porn? That's just silly. I agree with everything Roth said in TiM's post. I think there should be a whole seperate bunch of critics who rate horror because only a true fan understands horror.

I love this quote because BDD went and saw H2 and HATED it. So it is funny looking back how he is trashing the critic for hating it. And earlier he also had howRIP had to join the "Darkside" of roth lovers, and he has done nothing but trash Hostel 2. So looking back at all this I just kind of laugh at his earlier statements

Yeah and after all Rip, should definitely by far stay away from the "Darkside." But me hating H2, is an understatement. I have never thought that there was a horror movie out there that i purely loathe and literally want to go over to the director's house, beat him over the head with a barbed wire bat and knock some damn sense into him and give me my money back plus interest. So yeah it is funny. But that was before i saw the movie and expected it to be good, but luckily i thought it was an utter piece of shit movie. Oh and by the way, it was best wise of Eli Roth to stay away from 1408 b/c if he was part of it, it definitely wouldn't be as good as it is right now. So thank you Eli Roth for backing out of doing 1408.

Re: Why Eli Roth Left 1408
The term torture porn is being perceived wrong...the torture is sitting through Roth's movie, not the gore itself.
Re: Why Eli Roth Left 1408
I purely envy the guy who sat in the chair and got his private parts cut off.
Re: Why Eli Roth Left 1408
I think the discussion is why Eli Roth left "1408", not how bad "Hostel: Part 2" was.
Re: Why Eli Roth Left 1408
Like i said if Roth had a part of 1408 it would of sucked. It definitely wouldn't be as good as it is now.
Re: Why Eli Roth Left 1408
^ I can agree with that. "1408" is the WRONG film for Roth.

Re: Why Eli Roth Left 1408
A lot of people feel the same way about Tarentino as what I'm reading here about Roth. I think they're both very talented and have their own new ideas about what they want to film. After all the uninteresting and needless (most of the time) remakes of classic horror movies, their ideas are fresh and they're trying new things so I want to keep watching what they come up with. I really enjoyed all of Roth's movies so far and am looking forward to Cell. I have to say I am a little curious about what he would have done with a movie as different as 1408. And after all the recommendations here to see it I'm going this week for sure because I love that story.
Re: Why Eli Roth Left 1408
Thank you, Tina. You couldn't have said it any better.
