Print Blockbuster Inc. will rent high-definition DVDs only in the Blu-ray format in 1,450 stores when it expands its high-def offerings next month, dealing a major blow to the rival HD DVD format.

The move, being announced Monday, could be the first step in resolving a format war that has kept confused consumers from rushing to buy new DVD players until they can determine which format will dominate the market.

Re: Blockbuster to Favor Blu-Ray HD Disc

I have some theories on high-definition DVD war.....

1.) Blue-Ray is outselling HD DVD at Wal-Mart 2:1.  And seeing as though walmart is the #1 seller of DVDs, that may be an indication.  And now with Blockbuster hopping on Blu-ray's train, that may further push Blu-ray

2) Despite argument #1, Wal-Mart just bought a LOT of manufactured HD DVD players and they are going to be selling them for $299.  So with this new cheap HD DVD player hitting the market at Wal-Marts soon, one can argue that it will be a hit since Blu-Ray players are $600-700 on average.

3) It is a proven fact that whatever format the porn-industry went with has been a winner.  They chose VHS over Beta, and DVD over Laser Disc.  Now, which format did the porn indusrty go with.....HD-DVD.  So could this mean it will be the winner like the porn industry's last choices?  Only time will tell.

So with these three things, what have we learned?  Not much.  Blu-ray movies outsell HD-DVD movies at Wal-Mart, but the store is backing cheap HD-DVD players.  And the porn industry usually helps decide a winner and they went with HD-DVD so that may tip the scales too.  But dont count out Sony and their hope to push Blu-ray.  Since they put soooo much stock in Blu-ray by putting it in the PS3, they are gonna do all they can to make sure that technology doesnt die.

As for me, I went out and spent $99 on a Sony Upconverting DVD player, which upconverts standard DVDS to HD-quality.  I love it, looks fantastic on my LCD tv, and seeing as though this is for normal DVD's, I am not wasting an extra $10-20 per movie for the "official" HD brand discs.

I was looking at one of these just the other day and was wondering how well they worked.  I am hoping that I can upgrade my TV to HD by the end of the year.  Then I'll worry about what format for DVDs I need.

I like my upconverting player.  Obviously since I have an HD TV it works well since I have it in the TV's HDMI port.  If you get a new TV and want to look for a nice player but want to wait til the HD-disc war is settled, I recommend the Sony upconverting player in the mean time.  Best reviews on the web I found for a upconverting DVD player, and I've had no problems with it. And it's under $100

thanks jmh314:)

Re: Blockbuster to Favor Blu-Ray HD Disc

Does this new DVD format mean that your have to buy all new DVDs? heck I just went over 100.

Re: Blockbuster to Favor Blu-Ray HD Disc

yes, Blu Ray and HD-DVD are new formats of discs.  They come in smaller packaging but are still standard CD size.  They cost on average $10 more per movie.  The cheapest Blu-Ray player I have seen is in the $600 range, and the HD-DVD players are slightly cheaper aroun the $400-500 range.  It's rediculous.  But soon enough everything will be on one of these formats and that will blow.

Re: Blockbuster to Favor Blu-Ray HD Disc

Standard DVDs are going to be around for a very long time.. I mean look how long VHS hung around.. I actually still have some movies on VHS that I watch.. I don't see DVDs dying out for a very long time..

I have always had Blu-Ray down as winning this one.. Mainly because every major studio in Hollywood backs it except one and another has straddled itself on both..

Re: Blockbuster to Favor Blu-Ray HD Disc

I wanted Blu-ray to win because of the PS3....... but I must say, high definition technology mixed with muti-angles on a DVD will make some INCREDIBLE porn!

Re: Blockbuster to Favor Blu-Ray HD Disc

Yea heh only I heard some interview with a bunch of Porn stars and some of them said they didn't like it because it may reveal TOO much.. I'm guessing that they won't look as good on HD.. I like the multi-angle bit though.. big_smile

Well looks like my theory may be wrong.  "Porn gate" as it has been called seems to be over with BluRay soon to be getting their first official porn release.

Despite reports of a covert operation by Blu-ray backers to banish porn from the format, it seems a '70s adult superheroine has come to the rescue, with the official announcement of Vivid Entertainment's 'Debbie Does Dallas...Again' on Blu-ray.

Though the official Blu-ray Group never officially responded to Joone's accusations, the company did hurry out a follow-up statement last week claiming that the Sony-backed organization is committed to working with "all" content providers.

Well there goes my thought of HD-DVD winning the war by supporting the porn industry.
