Topic: Look Out! Here Come the Indies!

I have been writing for this site for just about three years now and I have come to notice something. WAY too many independent films get screwed over and are either sent direct to DVD or are just simply stuck in film purgatory for ages and ages with ...

theres soo many ppl out there who have the talent and have the film thats actally good for the horror genre, and they wont release them

Re: Look Out! Here Come the Indies!

Hell yeah! Thank you for this article. It's always good to hear this. It's rough being a filmmaker and I'm glad someone's listening/appreciating our work/vision. You guys rock and I'm soooo glad I found your site. Definitely my favorite horror site on the net. I visit everyday for all my news and it's great that you guys support indie so much. You're right, a lot of the studio films suck or are just trying to capitalize on a trend so props to everyone making something different or at least giving it their all to make something unique and not something processed and shitty...

Thanks for mentioning FOREVER with those movies. I really appreciate the support. We all need it as much as possible! I'm actually going through some bad financial problems right now so it's great that you posted this article. It gives me that boost or "pick-up" that I need to keep going. Couldn't have come at a better time! Not to sound corny... but from my heart... THANK YOU!!!  :-)

Re: Look Out! Here Come the Indies!

when i started this site one of the key goals was to make sure INDIE got as much limelight as mainstream. Its a shame alot of indie filmmakers dont take advantage of the free press available here. Thanks for the kind words about the site paul.

Re: Look Out! Here Come the Indies!

Yo man -- thanks for that. I'm sure anyone who is makin' stuff outside of the studio system can appreciate those sentiments. And also those who like watchin' the stuff made without the "suits" of influence (see: "Exorcist: The Beginning", "House of Wax" starring Paris Hilton?!, etc. etc.). Not that all indies are good or all studio pics are bad ... but the indies def have more heart, ya know? cool

Re: Look Out! Here Come the Indies!

Well said Goon.  It is a shame these smaller indie films cant be seen because they get dumped of or stuck in release hell.....I have been clamoring for a few releases for a while only to find out they are MIA.  It's just not fair to the people who work their asses off for these films but get nothing in return.

Re: Look Out! Here Come the Indies!

That's great! See... that's why I love this site. I seriously have you guys bookmarked in the group of sites I bring up that I check daily (as well as a subscription to your RSS feed), the other sites being craigslist and stuff for jobs haha....

Keep up the great work. You guys rock! big_smile

Re: Look Out! Here Come the Indies!

God bless ya Goon, that was fantastic, that needed to be said!! Hear Hear, I so agree with you. Indie's are my first love in the horror genre. Fan support needs constant viligence smile keep the excitement churning.
David J. Francis I am your cheerleader!! And all other hard at work Indie filmakers.

Re: Look Out! Here Come the Indies!

F**king A right, bro.  Thanks for the support and shout-outs for CLOSET SPACE.  We're currently doing a couple of final things to the movie to get it ready for the world at large, but the crowd at our premiere a few weeks ago went nuts for it.

Needless to say, when it's all ready to go, I'm sending a screener your way.

And to "sickf**k" up there - I actually know the guys that made S.I.C.K. (aka "Grim Weekend").  They shot it in and around Houston.  It's definitely not that great of a movie, but it technically was an "indie".  If it makes you feel any better, I hear they got horribly screwed on the distro deal.

I can understand how that would light a fire under you to make you want to do your own thing and get it out there, though.  I feel the same way.

Re: Look Out! Here Come the Indies!

Hey guys I'm glad you all enjoyed the article.. It is something I have been dwelling on for awhile now and I've noticed that it takes an ungodly amount of time for the regular fans to view some of these films. There are always some exceptions to the rules of course but for the most part Indie has quickly become my number one love.. Just keep making films guys because you love it. Not because a studio is going to pay you X amount of dollars to do it.

Re: Look Out! Here Come the Indies!

I'm sure that if given the chance there are a lot of us on here that would be more than happy to buy some of these movies and rave about them to our family and friends. At first chance I bought Deadlands: The Rising and even though they wanted to watch something mainstream I made all of my friends watch it with me and 90% of them liked it and bought a copy. The ones that didn't I kicked in the ass and called them big pussies. Anyway, point is there is a whole butt load of movies on that list I would kill to see but have no way to see them. We should have a thread on here that the directors can jump on to sell their films to the die hard fans like us. Both Paul and Mel have great sounding movies and any time you guys are ready I have a pay pal account or a credit card waiting to purchase the next great horror film.

Re: Look Out! Here Come the Indies!

i think rather then a thread they need to do like DJ has done the director of deadlands. he is a member of this community and without question its a big reason his film is so popular. 600,000 unique hits to this site last month. Thats alot of folks, and can translate into a lot of dvd sales.

I encourage indie filmmakers to do like DJ did, get involved on the site, and use it, without being a spammy whore mind you. DJ just posted that his film is the #1 seller for TEMPE and that about says it all.

Re: Look Out! Here Come the Indies!

No offenise to your friends Mel House, i didnt liek it and it was kinda slow based and i didnt liek the acting too much in it but i doubt my films r any better soo no offenise welcome to the site

Re: Look Out! Here Come the Indies!

We're going to put FOREVER up for sale very soon. We're actually finishing up the interviews this Sunday for the special features section of the DVD. We're planning on having a Visual FX breakdown, a Color Grading breakdown section which is pretty much a tutorial, and then some other things like a tour of the house, interviews about making the film, etc. Then we're going to send it out for professional packaging and duplication, etc. They'll be available hopefully in a month, just in time for Halloween!

Our site gets a load of hits (about 200,000 unique page hits last month alone) so we figured self distribution would be our best bet since if a distribution company picked it up, they'd probably do nothing to promote the damn thing, which is another shame. So why not promote it ourselves and distribute it ourselves?

When we have the DVDs ready, we'll be posting bulletins on myspace, I'll definitely come to this bulletin board and let you guys know, youtube, etc... so you should hear about the release. Hopefully it'll sell enough copies so that we can put money toward the next film. smile

Thanks!

All that needed to be said.  Great article, Gooner.  wink

Re: Look Out! Here Come the Indies!

Great to hear Paul.. Sounds like you guys have a lot in store for the DVD. Your probably right with the self distribution.. If you sell your film to someone else they will just make a large majority of the money off of your hardwork..

Re: Look Out! Here Come the Indies!

Great article man. Goon 4 Prez. big_smile

This is the kick in the ass the suits and financiers need. I know there are a ton of great indie filmmakers out there struggling to get the stuff seen and it is shame it is overlooked because of some polished PG-13 turd being passed off as a horror film.

Re: Look Out! Here Come the Indies!

self distribution can be dangerous, it can lead to no sales, but a strong presence , and good reviews will sell dvds.

"spammy whore" lol

btw, was wondering after I read about that Tempe releasing company. Does anyone know: is that like "Tempe, AZ"? I only ask cuz I'm (half) from AZ and went to school at ASU in Tempe. Horror-movie-appropriate-school-mascot the Sun Devils!!

haha i friggin hate spam. Nothing worse then a filmmaker who drops in with 1 post to say "buy my dvd". Its a big pet peeve of mine. Almost as bad as the viagra emails.

Seriously though you and DJ have grown a monster fan base around this site, two examples of indie filmmakers using the resources available to them. I am sure your dvd will sell well to Bryan.

Re: Look Out! Here Come the Indies!

That was an excellent article Goon. The only way I'll ever get to see horror indies is if I buy a DVD and I do buy indie DVD's if it's available. I love indies and I hope to view as many as I can.  This site is great for covering them.

Re: Look Out! Here Come the Indies!

i get alot more enjoyment out of tlaking about indie films then studio titles. Lets face it the studio could give two shits what i say in the long run. They want me for as long as its in theatres, afterwards they discard us. Sound familiar? Indie films are treated the same. Only makes sense that Goon and I have a larger interest in indie films. Better filmmaking in alot of cases and a feeling of pleasure in knowing the appreciate every second of coverage and can see it translate into dvd sales.

We will never cater to big studios and ignore the indies.. it wont happen. I will pull the plug and feed the server to my zombie horse before that happens.

It's a weird situation because I hate being sold to, yet I'm attempting to make commercial (see: sellable) art. I mean, I can't describe how much I hate ads. Like, if I'm working on the computer and those obnoxious radio spots come on I wanna throw the radio through my window (2nd-story apartment, so it crashes into the sidewalk real nice). TV ads are just as bad, but the TV is heavier so it takes more commercials for me to get to that point. big_smile

I guess the way I've always gone about it is, being a former reporter, giving what I got to da media and letting them write on it, since then people can read about it if they're interested. But ADS. I hate 'em.

Thanks, too, for the words of encouragement, Meh!

Re: Look Out! Here Come the Indies!

Thanks, Goon! I'll check it out. No doubt if there's cacti in the logo it has somethin' to do w/ Tempe, AZ (even if based in OH). Here's some maybe interesting/maybe not Tempe trivia ... remember that band The Gin Blossoms? They were from Tempe. So were The Refreshments, whose biggest song, I think, is the theme song for "King of the Hill" on TV. tongue Tempe and Scottsale are my fave parts of Metro Phoenix. If anyone passes through AZ, a stop in Tempe is necessary. It's kinda like Austin, TX cool.
