Topic: Martyrs - 2008

Well Ii bought Martyrs dvd and watched it last night. I guess I was or had high hopes for it from some reviews on here but it wasn't was gory as I thought it would be. Yeah some of the shotgun kills scenes were okay but I could name 20 horror films off the top of my head that had better kills and were much more gorier than Martyrs was.

The story for it was decent and the 2 lead females in it were good actresses but I just didn't really care for this film too much. I think that High Tension, Frontiers, and Inside were much better and gorier french films than Martyrs was.

I didn't like the ending to Martyrs either.

Overall I would give it a 5 out of 10 rating but that's just my opinion of it lol.:P:lol:

Re: Martyrs - 2008

I bought it a few weeks ago but have yet to pop it in. I think next Thursday on my off day I am gonna do a French movie marathon withsome sort of combo of Martyrs, Inside, Frontiers, Delicatessen, Ils,  Calavaire, and Sheitan

Re: Martyrs - 2008

Martyrs had a elements of the awful 90's flick called The Cell in it starring Jennifer Lopez and Eli Roth's crappy Hostel in it. I mean Martyrs was much better than those 2 films mind ya but it still just didn't do it for me.

Re: Martyrs - 2008

I want to buy it just for the discussion I can have with people after seeing it.  I thought it was okay and achieved what it set out to do, but it fell a little short for me.  I agree with this being the lesser of the recent French movies, but I do give them credit for trying something a little different.  I really liked the first 10 - 15 minutes, but then it went in a direction I didn't care as much about.  Like I said though, it is still on my list of "to buy" dvd's.

Re: Martyrs - 2008

RIP, honey, you missed the point.  It's not about the gore.  There is SO much more going on here.

Frontiere(s) doesn't even compare to Martyrs and I like Frontiere(s).  Inside is the only one of the bunch that comes close and that's only because it gives you something to think about as well.

Droog, I'm honestly surprised you don't love it as much as I do.  We should talk about that.  smile

Re: Martyrs - 2008

i hate movies all about gore and if you like gore driven films Martyrs is not it. Martyrs is very sadistic and very violent but driven by a strong story.

Re: Martyrs - 2008

Despite some not liking this movie, I am eagerly awaiting getting the DVD. Every new thing I hear gets me more and more interested. big_smile

Perfectly put.  smile
It is extremely violent and can be hard to take at times but the gore level alone isn't all that high.

Re: Martyrs - 2008

This film was too much like Hostel though and it had a strong story to it too. Hostel was sadistic too imho. I understand you're points Meh and Maven but the film just didn't do it for me is all. The story wasn't what I thought it would be or could have been imho. To each his own and I do think that Frontiers had a better story for it and was more sadistic in ways.

Now if you wanna see a really sadistic type film then go watch the asian film Audition.;)

Are we still friends, lol?:P

Re: Martyrs - 2008

Duh.  wink  If we weren't, who would send me drunken text msgs from GA football games?  lol

You really think Audition is more sadistic than Martyrs?  Wow.  I don't see that at all.

Did we see the same Hostel? Strong story? People get kidnapped and people pay money to torture them. That's it. No depth to that at all

Now that sounds like fun!
I have Martyrs in my queue and can't wait to see it, especially after all the discussion I have heard here.
Calvaire is an excelent film, just brutal and wacked!  But I believe that it is Belgian rather than French.

Re: Martyrs - 2008

I kind of agree with RIP, I really liked Martyrs but I think it's a little overrated. And I don't think the violence is hard to watch at all. Martyrs wouldn't even make my "most violent movies" list.

Oh yeah....don't you recall the part...."deep, deep, deep, deep, deep, deep....." when she is stabbing and poking the guy and his son with that large ass needle lol.:P

Re: Martyrs - 2008

Of course I do.  Not as bad.

Did you guys really pay attention?  I mean really pay attention.

Re: Martyrs - 2008

I don't think the violence was that disturbing and it did start to get repetitious and drag a bit in the final sequence.

Still, a good film. Probably closer to a 6 or 7 for me.

Yes ma'am and I was sober as a bat too lol. I even found myself fast forwarding the torture scenes towards the end cause they were kinda boring to me lol.

Re: Martyrs - 2008

They weren't supposed to be enjoyable.  LOL  This is not torture porn.

SPOILER**********************************************

It's not the violence itself, rather the intent.  In other films you can say "woo, she's crazy" or "damn he's an asshole when he's drunk" but here it was on purpose and relentless.  THAT is what makes it hard.  THAT is the point.  There is no way to reconcile what is happening when the beating continues even after she has become docile and submissive.  There is nothing she can do to make it go away.  There is nothing she can do to make them stop.  They aren't angry.  They aren't drunk.  They aren't crazy.  They are attempting to prove a point with no remorse, no regret, no sympathy and they will stop at nothing to get their answer.

And then the message.  Laugier's whole point is mesmerizing.

And just how sober are bats anyway?  tongue

But what exactly is their point........lol, to make some Martyr out of beating the tar crap out of women lol.....that's just insane. Make them grow weak and weary and dillusional just so they can see another world lol.....This film is more like The Cell to me in that aspect of it.

I'm sorry, I'm not ranting lol at all. I just think that the film wasn't all that and was a bit disappointed in it. It also had elements of Dark City in it too.

C'mon......give the RIP a smooch on the cheek or slap me silly lol.:P:lol:

Re: Martyrs - 2008

I still agree with RIP.

Fine have a kiss.  tongue  And I'll just throw up my hands and walk away.  LOL  I still love ya.  It's not like we haven't disagreed before.

At least we both like Jaws.  Where's Lon so I can kick his ass for that one.  LOL

Meh gets one too for agreeing with me.  But his is better.  lol;)

Re: Martyrs - 2008

This movie is in a class by itself. Disturbing and electric, mostly unsettling, but A+ Horror movie. Horror comes in all SHAPES and sizes and this movie dealt it wink

Re: Martyrs - 2008

I truly enjoyed martyrs.. the story was good and the acting was good, the subtitles didn't bother me but the ending did

Re: Martyrs - 2008

Then you both get kisses too.  smile

TDSR, I'm so glad you feel that way.  Tell me if you agree with what I said about the violence and why it's hard to take.  I'd love to hear your take on it as a woman.  Do you think it makes it any different for us?
