Ditto! This is one of my all time faves and what got me hooked on all the Asian horror films, never really saw any though that could really compare!

I reviewed this flick years ago on another website and wrote that I didn't much care for the first forty five minutes, having found them tedious and more in lines with a straight drama than a shocking horror film.  But as I've watched it again over the last few years, I see that Miike wanted you to be relaxed and taken by surprise by the sudden hard left turn the film takes.  I'm still not totally into the flick for the first half but once it picks up, few films have more effectively rattled my bones and left me gritting my teeth.
