Topic: Animal abuse in horror films.

Movies like Cannibal Holocaust should be banned I think. To make the film they horrifyingly murdered and tortured real animals! This should not be tollerated from horror fans!!

What do you think?

Re: Animal abuse in horror films.

Have you ever watched Survivor Man on the Discovery Channel? He kills, skins, and eats animals in almost every episode. How come no one ever says anything about that? No one is going to force you to watch Cannibal Holocaust, if it offends you don't watch it. There is no need to ban it.

Re: Animal abuse in horror films.

good point Suspiria. i personally never understood peoples hate for Cannibal Holocaust. i think its a great film, with an excelent story, and yes it is disturbing, but isnt that why we watch horror? is to try and scare and disturb ourselves???

Re: Animal abuse in horror films.

I don't think Cannibal Holocaust or any other film should be band, if you don't want to see animal cruelty don't watch it or watch the cut version. It was 30 years ago when most people didn't bother about things like that, Suspiria raises a good point about shows like that on tv, i myself am not interested in seeing things like that but everyone is different & if they want to watch those films they should.

Re: Animal abuse in horror films.

Cannibal Holocaust wouldn't be the same if some pussies edited or banned it.  I am glad that this sort of stuff no longer goes on in movies, but what's done is done.

It has been cut, in the UK you can't get the version with the animal cruelty in it unless we buy region 1 from the US, as far as i know everything else is pretty much there.

Re: Animal abuse in horror films.

I'm not for any living thing having to actually suffer for someone's art, however films like CH were made in different times during a different atmosphere and I won't hold that against them. Like Zombie Slasher said - if you don't like them - ignore them. Realistic killing is so scant in horror as it is that it's really just a curious footnote these days . As far as artificial depictions of violence I am open to any atrocity (animals, kids, grandma, whatever) as long as it serves the story and engages the viewer in some way emotionally.

Re: Animal abuse in horror films.

I just dont understand why someone is out to ban a movie that's been out for nearly thirty years....

Kill all the animals. Torture them. Film it. Fuck PETA. If I want a film where natives (that acually eat monkey brains) are going to eat monkey brains, I'm not going to half-ass it.

Now that I have that out of my system. Quit bitching. It was a movie that's been around for such a long time that it wouldn't make any difference if you tried to ban it, aside from making a couple pretentious environmentalists be able to sleep better at night.

And to reiterate what many before me have said, and many after me shall say: If you don't agree with it, don't watch it.

Re: Animal abuse in horror films.

See, EBK, I will word it differently than you

STOP BEING PUSSIES, IT'S HORROR NOT CHILDRENS MOVIES

Re: Animal abuse in horror films.

I don't think it should be banned, i think it is wrong but if someone wants to watch it go right ahead, im not going to watch animal abuse/cruelty. I used to watch survivor man but whenever he killed animals it always bothered me.

It's where freedom of choice comes in , if you watch and find you don't like ( Like me) . Simply use the off switch . And pass the D.V.D on

Re: Animal abuse in horror films.

You want to see animal cruelty?  Watch a Kosher kill.  Or check out what goes on behind the scenes at your average slaughter house.  Just because it is not captured on film or is banned from being shown on film does not change the fact that it really happens.  If it bothers you, you don't have to watch it.

Exactly

Re: Animal abuse in horror films.

In Hunchback of the Morgue there is a long scene where rats have been set on fire and they run around frantically.   "Ben, you're always running here and there..."    lol

Re: Animal abuse in horror films.

From what I've read (I, too, was affected by the animal killings), the animals that were killed were also eaten by the natives that were featured in the movie.  Yes, it was exploitive, perhaps gratuitous.  And I believe that in an atmosphere like that, I seriously doubt that the locals would allow a valuable resource (just because they're not farmed and slaughtered for consumption) to be wasted.

I cringed at the viewing, and my husband (a devout vegetarian of over 25 years) has not seen it yet, because I believe it will offend him greatly.  If one has read the reviews, it's not news, nor is it a shocker that real animals are killed.  Anyone who's read about this movie should know this going into it.  Be prepared for it, and if you don't have the stomach for it, the obvious applies: don't watch it.

Re: Animal abuse in horror films.

Of course you do not ban it.  I hate animal violence.  How did you think I felt watching monkey brains being eaten in "Faces of Death"?  I won't watch it again, but GStone got it right with his "Stop being pussies" line.

Should videos of Michael Vick's dog fights (if they existed) be banned?  No.  Would I rail against them?  Yes.  But some people don't realize how bad violence is until you shove their face into it.  And if a person still enjoys such a video, they are already way sick in the head (in a bad way, not the HM way).

Censorship of most things just leads to bad places.  Don't get me wrong, some things should be banned, for example child porn.  (And then throw the perpetrators into gen-pop- they are REAL popular there).

Re: Animal abuse in horror films.

I can see where firelfy is going with this, and I can see where everyone else is going with this. I'm split in the middle, damn I hate being my own devils advocate.

I want to kiss you somewhere naughty for this post.  Way to read my mind, Monkey.  wink

Re: Animal abuse in horror films.

Damn man, really. Don't rent the damn thing. I'll be damned, watch some damn thing else damn it.

Shit, when I worked on Junkyard Dog, the killers dog was stabbed by Vivica's character, and shot by Dourif's character.

The dog was supplied by a professional trainer! With PETA on their ass every time the dog had a shot!

COME ON!

That dog was treated better than we were! (well, you know, as good as a dog can be treated)

But really, get a freekin' grip man.
