Re: Martyrs - 2008
IMO, "Martyrs" wasn't as smart as it thought it was. Well made, definitely, but not brilliant, and that is perhaps its worst failing--pretending to be something it wasn't.

Re: Martyrs - 2008
I have more appreciation for the film now, thanks to all of you, particularly Alien who helped me find the proper words to my question. I consulted with a historian who defined the original Greek definition of the world "Martyr" which suddenly made things clear for me. I really should have paid more attention. Living Dead Doll, thanks. Too bad I couldn't live up to the name "sMart". As for the second half, while I understand and accept why we, as the viewer had to be subjected to multiple torture sessions to get the point across, I still found them to be repetitive and boring. "Yes, he's beating her...again...." "Yes, I'm aware of the passage of time..dreadfully aware." "Why hasn't she choked the bitch with that chain yet, and martyred her ass?" Yawn.

LivingDeadDoll wrote:Maven, I've loved reading your comments on this thread. As a woman, I think the mindset is probably very different, as in the mother/daughter/sister relationship between Anna and Lucie. As a recovering Catholic, the whole religious thing was fascinating to me. They wanted the knowledge, but by inflicting rather than experiencing. That's a selfish bitch-ass cheat in my opinion. You want to know what it feels like, then feel it.
Thank you so much. I don't know how I missed this thread when it came back but I just saw this and I appreciate the feedback on my feedback. LOL I am a recovering Baptist (sheesh) myself, and so my life was steeped in fire and brimstone a lot in the beginning. And even though I no longer believe those things, this film touched a lot of nerves for me on those levels. It's interesting how religion weaves into the brain, huh?

Re: Martyrs - 2008
This was one of the most moving films I have seen in a long time. It has a depth that makes you question how far you yourself would go to prove something.

Yes. Thank you.
Re: Martyrs - 2008
WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD I just watched Martyrs for the first time last night and was blown away by it. Well, more precisely, I was blown away by the first half of it. What an excellent set up! Relentless, intriguing and bloody as hell. The second half was interesting, too, but less so, and not without some gaps in logic. I completely understand what the tormentors are after, but the ends don't justify the means. You want proof of an afterlife, so you torture and deprive young women because they're more susceptible to a pain-induced "spiritual awakening" and more liable to bear a glimpse into what lies beyond death. Okay. But, how about this: if you want to believe in an afterlife, take your ass to church. You know the tormentors have to be religious zealots, so they should know that even if there is an afterlife, they're not going to enjoy it; by killing people, they're damning themselves to hell. Which makes the old woman shooting herself at the end even more illogical. Okay, so, I know it sounds like I'm giving the flick a hard time, but the point is, despite what I perceive to be as its flaws, it made me think, it made me analyze, it made me wrap my brain around it. And that's the kind of ballsy horror film we need more of.

Re: Martyrs - 2008
I thought I posted my thoughts about this movie in this thread. must have been somewhere else. Anyway, I believe I said, "I don't know what to think about this movie" and "I don't think I will need to see this movie again", or something like that. I think I also posted that I may some day see the need to watch it again. Well, I think that time has come. This, like so many other movies (most recently "Paranormal Activity") has become more intriguing to me the more I talk about it. I come away from the film felling "meh" only to start telling people about the flick and and getting really excited while I tell some details, haha. Now I feel the need to own Martyrs on Blu-ray. This happens alot to me. Anyone else have this happen to them.
Re: Martyrs - 2008
***SPOILERS**** i bought martyrs recently and watched it for the second time the other day - i feel asleep after anna had been caught by the cultists and the old lady was talking shit - i remember really liking the movie after the first view - after watching it a second time and not watching it fully - i feel as though it wasnt as good as i first thought - the only reason as to why i thought so highly of it, was because of the violence, disturbing nature, and special effects of the film - when i think of it - inside was a much better movie for what i like/enjoy. ie. Gory Violence
Re: Martyrs - 2008
one of the best horror films I watched. Many people with whom I spoke do not really like it, but for me it was a great
Re: Martyrs - 2008
thats cause you're from croatia
Re: Martyrs - 2008
I didn't like it too much violence, not my type of movie actually.. after the movie I felt like I was brain fu***, i had to watch Pocoyo for several hours to regain my mental strenght again i didn't had opinion until few days and I watched the movie weeks ago I guess I'm healthy again
Re: Martyrs - 2008
i watched it with no idea what it was about first i thought it was a psycological horror then it changed when they went into that nice house. it messed with my mind for a bit after watching it.
Re: Martyrs - 2008
I am with you Moviemaven, Martyrs is not a gore movie and far from it. It's a very special movie in which it was made and it is like a emotional rollercoasters. From gasping from the cruelty, to feeling sadness from the abuse the girls adhere. And it try's to show how cruel humans can be an d to what extent man would. Martyrs can not be compared with frontiers, its two totally oppesite movie.
Re: Martyrs - 2008
I personnely think it is a brilliant film deserving the top spots in the list of top films. Thus the whole nature of the film makes it great and i will recommend to any one But people need to understand that is not a gore movie or not your usual movie. Its a very emotional movie in which you feel the sadness of the girls

Re: Martyrs - 2008
In the first half I did feel for both girls. It was easy to understand the motives of both women. I also liked the ambiguity, the mystery. Was Lucie correct? Or was she just crazy? I was on the edge of my seat. Then the mystery was solved and I felt that suddenly I was watching an entirely different movie. Suddenly the raw power and emotion that had so thoroughly sucked me in was replaced by tedium. It was brutally boring. And it didn't help that I wasn't buying the motivations behind the torture and eventual murder. It just left me flat.
Re: Martyrs - 2008
I feel the same way smart. I was on the edge of my seat while watching lucie facing here dark demons. Was it real or was it just in here mind. The brutal scenes involving lucie is not for the faint harted. SPOILER ALERT TO FOLLOW The only negative thing i have with martyrs is; i wished lucie never died. I could not believe see was dead and so early in the film

Re: Martyrs - 2008
The movie went from a taut thriller to a brutal treatise on existentialism. The torture porn equivalent of staring at the lint in one's bellybutton. :) At least the brutality was the common denominator between the two movies I saw.
Re: Martyrs - 2008
i dont find it as enjoyable as other films, but i dont think it is meant to be enjoyable - i find the slaughter of the family highly enjoyable - and the other violent scenes - not many - but it deserves massive respect for the disturbing power it portrays - it did leave me constantly thinking about the film for a good long week - dunno of many other films like that, that have left me feeling violated after first view
Re: Martyrs - 2008
I just watched it Martyrs again last night, for the 2nd time, and agree about the ending being a bit out there. Other than that, it was hard to turn away and I never got bored while watching. I've yet to see Inside, and love Frontier(s). While watching Martyrs there were a few times I groaned/cringed, and could almost feel the pain of those girls. I found myself guessing if the parents she slaughterd were actually the one's who tortured her. The acting was top notch and the make up and special FX were awesome. As for a rating. I would give it a 7.5.

Re: Martyrs - 2008
MARTYRS is one of my favorites from the last few years, and quite possibly my 3rd favorite foreign horror film behind LET THE RIGHT ONE IN and INSIDE. Great stuff. SPOILERS: So what do you think she told the old woman at the end? There are several different possibilities . . . .
