Topic: The Colony on Discovery Channel???

Has anyone seen the new post-apocalyptic reality show The Colony on Discovery Channel?  Personally I had never heard of it until I saw the episodes of it available for download on my Xbox and I must say the idea intrigued me.  They are already 4 episodes into the show so I'm gonna have to see if I can catch up somehow.  (just saw it's available on Hulu.  God bless the internet!)

If you haven't heard of it, here is the official Synopsis from Discovery Channel:

What would you do in the wake of a global catastrophe? How would you find food? Water? Shelter?

The Colony is a controlled experiment to see exactly what it would take to survive and rebuild under these circumstances. For 10 weeks, a group of 10 volunteers, whose backgrounds and expertise represent a cross-section of modern society, are isolated in an urban environment outside Los Angeles and tasked with creating a livable society.

With no electricity from the grid, no running water and no communication with the outside world, all the volunteers have to work with are their skills and whatever tools and supplies they can scavenge from their surroundings.

Experts from the fields of homeland security, engineering and psychology have helped design the world of The Colony to reflect elements from both real-life disasters and models of what the future could look like after a global viral outbreak.

Over the course of the 10-week experiment, the Colonists must work together to build the necessities of survival, such as a water-filtration system, a battery bank that powered their electricity, a solar cooker, a shower system and a greenhouse – and even some niceties (a coffee maker!).

Re: The Colony on Discovery Channel???

Oh yes, another UNreality show.  I've seen the ads, but I'm not really too interested in this.  In a REAL scenerio there would be infection, desease and real bullets.  You really won't see these things in reality tv.  These people picked for the show don't really need to worry about dieing.  It would be bad for ratings.

Re: The Colony on Discovery Channel???

I just watched the first episode, it was pretty interesting.

Skidog, of course they arent gonna shoot at them.....but there is still possibilities of infection or disease.  I mean they are siphoning water from the LA River.....not quite as polluted as the river I'm used to here in Chicago but still pretty nasty.  Like any reality show, infection/disease can occur but of course if they get too sick they will be whisked off the show so Discovery doesnt have mega lawsuit on their hands for death.

Sure they have quite a bit of resources att he beginning and all have particular skill sets(like a doctor, a machinist and a few different types of engineers) but it's just intriguing to see people create and fend for themselves with limited supplies and skillsets.  Yeah I know, in real life finding a skilled group like this or this much supplies wont happen, but come on, its television.  Doesnt mean it cant be interesting.

One thing I thought was funny is they have marauders who come and try and "infiltrate" their sanctuary.  According the the narrator, the marauders were told by Discovery not to physically hurt anyone but they said that the "survivors" dont know that.  So you got all these people holding pipes and boards looking to defend themselves against people told not to attack.  lol.  Fuck being a marauder, if one of these people overreacts and hits me with a pipe or board I would fuck them up.
