Topic: The Horror of the 2010's

Well, we're already deep into 2009, heck, it'll be September soon! Soon it will be the turn of a decade. Our current decade was filled with horror remakes, and of course a couple of gems. What will the next decade for horror be like? What will be braught out?

Me? I think we'll continue with a lot of remakes, but I also think something different and new will come about. I'm not sure what that will be though. It seems every decade in horror history has something that explodes (monster movies for the 50's, slasher in the 80's, remakes for the 2000's etc, etc, etc)  and becomes huge.

So what do you guys think? What will be the next big thing for the 2010's for horror films?

Re: The Horror of the 2010's

Psychological horror is where it's at if you ask me.
I'm tired of the Saw mentality of "lets kill a bunch of people in clever ways shtick" that's become so commonplace - and don't even get me started on remakes, reboots and sequels mad
Give me something to chew on intellectually, and let my imagination occasionally fill in some of the more horrible implications of what I'm witnessing.
And stop entertaining me - I want to be scared! LOL.
I can only hope Europe maintains its edge in this category and continues to crank out some well crafted gems, cuz Hollywood still doesn't have a clue.

Re: The Horror of the 2010's

im hoping more alien movies... but done propa.. serious atmosphere and scares

more realistic head twisting demented psychos

Re: The Horror of the 2010's

Cool thought, not quite sure. Ultra violence maybe? Something so violent brutal and disturbing idk.

Re: The Horror of the 2010's

The last decade was filled with several J Horror remakes and homages to old works. I hope that this new decade remakes more French, Spanish, and Asian (Korea, Thailand, China) horror film remakes because most of the more brutal and original material seems to spawn from there. We should see some new material too with guys like Neil Gaiman, Clive Barker, Chuck Palahniuk, and others finally getting their back catalog of work being put to the screen. Also, with people like Eli Roth, the creators of the Feast franchise, and other new genre film makers getting some attention; we could be in for a great decade of horror. Lets not forget Rob Zombie who still has some brutality left in him I am sure.

Re: The Horror of the 2010's

I know what i'd like to see.. for starters... some good sci-fi themed horror ..also it's about time we had a good killer to root for again .. like a freddy or jason , but someone new and original (yeah i know i'm asking for a lot there...)

Re: The Horror of the 2010's

I think... and this is really out there lol

We'll see French movies gain more noteriety among the horror genre. I do not think Hollywood as the pretense to change as they seem rather comfortable in their little shell. I think France will release a movie that goes beyond what was in Martyrs, Inside and even Frontiere(s) and I predict it becoming a favourite among many who love the horror genre.

Like some said I agree. I do want to see a killer I am rooting for a la Freddy etc. The killers of late have become complacent and lack any heart. I want a killer who rips others to shreds and that we are rooting for. But above all else I want ORIGINALITY! Please give me something original in 2010, something creative, something that makes my heart beat and has me hiding behind the pillow in terror.

HW is lost, but you can do it France, c'mon! big_smile

Re: The Horror of the 2010's

I think foreign cinema in general will have a shining point in the 2010's.. I agree with BTK about the French cinema, and I'm hopping deadhorse will come true so we can enjoy some great psychological thrillers.

Re: The Horror of the 2010's

If we can get more movies like Spiral and Se7en, i'll be real happy.

Re: The Horror of the 2010's

I don't think a new Pinhead equal to the old one will ever be created.. Pinhead is unique! tongue

Re: The Horror of the 2010's

I just want to see something original.

Re: The Horror of the 2010's

It is easy to focus on the horror remakes of the last decade, simply because they raised the ire of genre fans like us.  But the fact of the matter is, that this has been a great decade for horror and horror fans.  We have seen the advent of torture porn, spoofs of torture porn, shaky cam, spoofs of shaky cam, Asian cinema, remakes of Asian cinema, wonderful original works from all over the world, France, Spain, Belgium, Russia, as well as great independent films made right here in North America.  If Hollywood fails us, we now have options: direct to DVD, cable, satelight, independent film channels, movies streamed online, web casts, webisodes, pod casts, you name it, so many ways to get our horror fix.
So what do I hope for in the decade to come?  More of the same of course: continued growth in foreign cinema with new players joining in on the fun, increased support for independent films in America, more web based material, the continued stories of Leslie Vernon,  Victor Crowley, Chrome Skull, Clover (hopefully), and Alien, and of course more hollywood remakes.  Because  let's face it, until they start loosing money doing it, they will continue to make them.   We just don't have to spend our hard earned cash to see them in the theater if we don't want to. wink

Re: The Horror of the 2010's

I think we will continue on the traditon of remakes, but I just hope for some new, really scary, original stuff.

Re: The Horror of the 2010's

I think we'll see more bio-engineered monsters of one sort or another. With wars going on there is always tales of chemical influences on soldiers and weird, underground, government testing. District 9 sort of jump starts this. Just watch... more monsters created in secret government labs are coming.

Kind of a Hannibal Lecter with more of a pure horror edge instead of psychological thriller?
