Back to the Future & Pulp Fiction are my faves, there are probably more but those 2 spring to mind.

Re: Greatest (non horror_ movie soundtrack of all-time

Halloween and/or Hellraiser.  I have a fondness for all instrumentals.

Re: Greatest (non horror_ movie soundtrack of all-time

Forrest Gump had a pretty damn amazing soundtrack

Re: Greatest (non horror_ movie soundtrack of all-time

If we're going non-horror, you can't beat "Lilo and Stitch".  Awesome all the way through.  Unless you don't like Elvis.  (It has more Elvis songs than any of Elvis' movie did.  And great instrumentals.)

Re: Greatest (non horror_ movie soundtrack of all-time

I'm adding Watchmen to my list.  Bob Dylan, Nina, Simon and Garfunkle AND Leonard Cohen?  I wonder who Zack Snyder had to blow to get all those great songs for this flick.

Speaking of Simon and Garfunkle, you can't have a great soundtrack discussion without mentioning their numerous contributions to The Graduate.

I'll back you up on the 'mainstream soundtrack'.  Came out when I was in high school and doing theatre.  Girls loved that shit.  And guys who could dance.....
