Topic: Wizard of Gore Remake

I guess the success of the remake of H.G. Lewis' "2000 Maniacs"  has caused the Godfather of Gore's movie catalogue to be reviewed for other possible remakes.  It looks like next up will be "The Wizard of Gore."  I liked a lot of Lewis' films but this one lost my interest and became as confusing as hell after the first half.  I recently watched it again (you can see it online for free at cinemanow.com)  and was still confused.  The remake should be interesting though as they have Crispin Glover(Willard),Brad Dourif(Child's Play, etc.) Bijou Phillips (Hostel 2)and Re-Animator star Jeffery Combs.     Here is the advance poster that is on the alleged "official site" Unfortunately it is the only thing on the official site right now.

Re: Wizard of Gore Remake

I can't honestly tell, I don't remember seeing the original one.

Re: Wizard of Gore Remake

Yea, I don't know that I have heard about the original one. I guess I will have to check it out.

Re: Wizard of Gore Remake

Yea you can watch it for free online.. I know the thread is on the forum somewhere..

Re: Wizard of Gore Remake

Would you say its worth the watch?

Re: Wizard of Gore Remake

Yeah, the first half is good, second is very confusing.  Cinemanow.com is the site I believe.  They also have I Drink Your Blood, which is definately worth a watch!

LA Film Fest Review: The Wizard of Gore

Horror movies seem to come and go in cycles. Just as the wave of Japanese re-makes tapered off, so-called “torture† porn began its ascent. Given that, it’s refreshing to watch a horror film like The Wizard of Gore that doesn’t fit neatly into any category. It certainly has its share of gore (wonderfully specific and gruesome, by the way), but the bloodletting never overshadows the psychological war that is at the heart of the film’s story.

The universe of The Wizard of Gore is a dystopian downtown Los Angeles, half-Suicide Girls, half-Blade Runner. Into this world comes Ed Bigelow (Kip Pardue), a peculiar sort fond of bespoke suits and horn-rimmed glasses. Along with his girlfriend Maggie (Bijou Phillips), he attends a magic show presided over by Montag the Magnificent (Crispin Glover). There they see a trick that startles everyone. To the horror of the audience, Montag eviscerates a woman on stage. As everyone begins to panic, the lights flash off. When they return, the woman stands on the stage completely fine, her intestines safely returned to the comfort of her body.

Ed is fascinated by the trick and returns the next night to see Montag perform it again. The mode of death is different, but the result is the same. A dead woman seemingly returns to life right in front of everyone’s eyes. Ed is perplexed, unable to figure out how Montag is doing it. Things take a darker turn, though, when the women from the show start turning up dead 24 hours later from injuries similar to the ones inflicted by Montag. Soon enough, Ed is on the investigation. He turns to Jinky (Joshua John Miller), a friend in the coroner’s department and Dr. Chong, (Brad Dourif, in full freak mode), but neither is able to help him solve the mystery of Montag.

The ultimate resolution, while not entirely satisfying, is both logical and resonant. The film’s real success lies in the tableau it creates for the audience. The gloomy world of The Wizard of Gore is captured perfectly by DP Christopher Duddy, relying heavily on dutch framing and long tracking shots. For a low-budget feature, the production design and gore fx are excellent in conception, design and execution. In a bit of stunt casting, actual Suicide Girls are used as Montag’s victims, but the effect is wonderful. They are both sexy and casual in their nudity—natural performers.

The ultimate credit, of course, goes to director Jeremy Kasten who has assembled a movie far more ambitious than the typical horror flick. While I would have liked to see a bit more from Phillips, Glover and Pardue deliver solid and, in Glover’s case, inspired performances. I honestly didn’t expect much from The Wizard of Gore, but I was pleasantly surprised by how much I liked it.

The Wizard of Gore screens again on Thursday, June 28th at 10:00 p.m. at the Landmark.

I Want To See This!

Re: Wizard of Gore Remake

Great news about the LA film fest.  I enjoyed the origional one a lot.  I even did a review of it on my morguespace.  I think it looks like it could be a pretty damn good remake.  If you havent seen the origional, do so.

Re: Wizard of Gore Remake

Oh and I dont know why but I find something creepy with this picture of Crispin Glover and Bijou Phillips together at a premeire.  Just kind of off putting and I dont know why.  Click the link and see for yourself.

Re: Wizard of Gore Remake

I never saw the original, but the cast in this one looks really good.  I love Crispin - so much creepy good fun.  You're right jmh, something is off with the picture, but maybe that's because it's hard to picture him with someone like her.

Re: Wizard of Gore Remake

I got around to watching the original.  A while ago, actually.  It's a very good film, so hopefully, the remake is good in that sense.

Re: Wizard of Gore Remake

I dont' know I was waiting for this one.. but after seeing some of Kasten's previous work I am beginning to question whether this flick will be good or not..

Re: Wizard of Gore Remake

Yeah Goon, hit fil The Thirst kind of sucked but The Attic Expeditions wasnt terrible.  After all, he was lucky enough to have Seth Green, Ted Raimi, and Alice Cooper play roles.  It was by no means great, but was entertaining enough to give me hope for TWOG remake.
