Topic: Is Ju-on / The Grudge (2002) a remake of Ju-on: The Curse (2000)?

I'm completely confused by these films, and wikipedia and IMDB don't seem to hold the answers.

I literally watched the first three Ju-on films last night and I have no idea if The Grudge (2002) is supposed to be a remake of Ju-on (2000), or whether it should be considered a sequel.

Anyone?

As far as I'm aware The Grudge is a remake of the first Ju-On movie hmm

Ok I just double checked and did a bit of research and The Grudge (2004 with Sarah Michelle Geller) is a remake of Ju-On-The Grudge.
Going by the IMDB write ups Ju-On-The Grudge(2003) appears to be a sequel to Ju-On (2000)

There's also a Ju-On that was released in 2000 Morguey and I think that's what's helping cause the confusion wink

Ju-On-The Grudge (2002)
The Grudge (2004)
The synopsis for the last 2 sound pretty damn similar and both seem to follow on from the first.

I'm going to file The Grudge / Ju-on / Whatever (2002) away in my mind as a sequel, then. Damn Japanese series and their naming conventions.

Ju-on (2000) informally known as Ju-on: The Curse
Ju-on 2 (2000) informally known as Ju-on: The Curse 2, which people think was direct to video but wasn't
Ju-on (2002) informally known as Ju-on: The Grudge, but formally translated into English as The Grudge, and technically it premiered in 2002 though the wide release was 2003
Ju-on 2 (2003) formally translated into English as Ju-on: The Grudge 2 and not The Grudge 2
The Grudge (2004) the American remake but directed by the same guy who did the first four.

.. and so on. This series is worse than the Halloween series for film title continuity.

It is a remake of Ju-on: The Grudge.  However, there was 4 Japanese Ju-on movies that came out before the American remake

Ju-on (sometimes called Ju-on: The Curse)
Ju-on 2
Ju-on: The Grudge
Ju-on: The Grudge 2

then after all that came the American The Grudge,  The Grudge 2, and The Grudge 3

After The Grudge 3 in America, for the 10th Anniversary of the series there was Ju-on: Shiroi Roujo and Ju-on: Kuroi Shoujo in Japan.  These are pretty different, more so just sequels in name because they dont even focus around the Saeki Murders. 

So theres 6 Japanese Ju-on films, and 3 american Grudge films

Dont fuck with me and my Asian horror Macho  lol I've seen all 6 Japanese films, only watched one of the American films and that was good enough for me.

And seeing that Takashi Shimizu had a hand in pretty much all those films, i'll take this time to recommend his film Marebito, which was filmed in 8 days between the filming of Ju-on: The Grudge and the american version of The Grudge

I first watched the two Ju-On Curse (2000) movies and got hooked! I found them more horrifying than the Japanese Grudge (2003). Before all of them, Shimizu had made a couple of five minute shorts for TV that inspired the films. The shorts also feature actors he used in the films.

My personal opinion is that the films aren't remakes, but are all part of the same timeline. The films just watch the curse spread differently.

With the sequels, it's very confusing, but I've carefully reviewed then all on my blog to help newcomers.

I've also watched and reviewed the new video spin-offs Ju-On Black Ghost White Ghost.
