Oh snap, that is some fine shnizzle! My parents have tons of records, and a couple of years ago I bought my dad a hi-end player: I now it's stupid but I swear the tone on those things are better than CDs.
Oddly, it's probably not the tone you're hearing but the result of what's known as The Loudness Wars.
Basically, some bright shmuck in the 50s thought it'd be a good idea to make his record "hot" by adjusting some frequencies in the master thereby making it stand out more on a jukebox.
This practice went on but not crazy until the advent of the CD where compression became more feasible due to the limitation of vinyl media. Now highly compressed music is all you hear and because of that, vinyl and old stereos "sound better"--which is subjective to begin with.
Anyway, that shmuck in the 50s wasn't as much of a shmuck as the one(s) in the 90s who compressed CD beyond recognition.
