In Pulp Fiction...
I have heard a few theories. There are some clues in the film.

Well supposedly, the Devil steals your soul through the back of your neck (I forget which religious mytho this is from) and at one point we see a band aid on the back of Marcellus Wallace's neck.

I kinda like the idea of it being a soul, based on a few of the "clues", but I'm not completely convinced of it either. I love that it's always been left ambiguous by QT.

I know lots of people say it's either gold or Marcellus Wallace's soul -- which they base on the band-aid on the back of his head, a location where some old legends claim one's soul can be removed from the body, but which actually is only there to cover up a scar on the back of Ving Rhames' neck...
...but the truth is, there's nothing specific in the briefcase. Whoever watches the flick can imagine whatever they want to be in there, but it's merely what Alfred Hitchcock referred to as a "McGuffin" -- a non-specific term which denotes a plot element which propels a story forward and/or acts as the goal of the characters. So really a person can say whatever they want is in there and there's no way it would be wrong.
Then again, there's also no way they'd be right, because there's nothing in there.

Yeah, actually marcellous has the band aid on threw the whole film I think. Also the combination to the safe was 666.
I also like how they kept it a mystery DH. It makes for all these interesting theories LOL

Have you read the script Lon? I have heard some say in the script, the case contains the diamonds from Resevior Dogs.

The briefcase combo being 666 was just a "cool factor" kind of thing. Like in the film Doom Generation, and every time somebody bought something the total came to $6.66.
Chainsaw -- I've read the script, though it's been a while. I know the diamonds from Reservoir Dogs is another rumor, but I don't recall them being mentioned in the Pulp Fiction script (though it's been a good ten years since I read it).

I believe in one interview QT said that when he originally wrote it he had something like diamonds in mind, but that seemed too cliche

The popular soul theory being a good one, Tarintino said it was gonna be diamonds, it is an actual orange light bulb casting the glow... I just like it being a case with mysterious contents. Just watched this film a few days ago, now I'm in the mood for Resevoir Dogs and True Romance.
