If we're stepping outside of the US here- Italy.  Then France & Britain.
If we're stepping outside of Canada- the US.

USA - Overbloated PG13 sucks
France - 1 good movie in 10 years means nothing

Personally, I'm waiting for Russia to cut loose.  I didn't like either Nightwatch or Daywatch, but if those are any indication Russia at least has some chutzpah.  I'd like to see more of what Russian filmmakers have to offer.

And older Ruskey film, which I haven't seen but I heard good stuff about, was Vij, Viy, or Spirit of Evil, depending on the release.  Surprised you didn't like Nightwatch.

I tried to like it but it was ridiculously uneven.  Kudos to the filmmakers for their gumption and verve but man, that flick was all over the place.  Same with Daywatch, IMO. hmm

Japan. They invented the whole psychological horror thing, and Hollywood's remade tons and tons of movies that were huge successes. Asian culture's generally more introverted, so their movies tend to deal more with the mind than Euro/American movies, which are mostly about ACTION ACTION ACTION.

I'd be hard pressed to pick a single one.  I can go top three, though:

Japan -- since the late 90s they've been pumping out genre fare non-stop, with many more hits than misses.  Ringu, Ju:On, Dark Waters and Ichi the Killer (while not horror, it's as graphic and exploitative as they come) are some examples.

England -- while Hammer Horror may be weak point when it comes to horror viewing (I haven't seen very many) their contribution and influence on genre films is immeasurable.

France -- for several years during the first decade of the new millenium, I don't think a single country in the world could touch France for its strong genre output.  Stuff like Inside, Frontier(s) and Haute Tension brought a level of grisliness back to horror films, while the US merely continued its tired trend of remaking inferior copies of superior originals.

Britain & Italy...in the awesome decade of 60's & 70's!

Japan: Not only they have brought a trend of super spooky ghost stories in modern horror films, they have actually got quite a great contribution in the genre....and only one is enough to defend this claim....GODZILLA! big_smile

Germany (specially for giving films like Nosferatu, Dr. Caligari  & Vampyr in silent era )
Sweden (for The Phantom Carriage (1921) & lately...Let the right one In)
