Topic: What directors have made back to back great films?
Godfather 1 & 2 were not back to back Still it's hard to argue against Coppola, but I'll go with William Friedkin The French Connection- 1971 The Exorcist- 1973 I am surprised no one mentioned John McTiernan: Predator Diehard Hunt for Red October .........or Walter Hill: The Warriors The Long Riders Southern Comfort 48hrs

Edgar Wright comes to mind. Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz and Scott Pilgrim vs The World. Also Bob Clark with Children Shouldn't Play With Dead Things, Deathdream and Black Christmas.
Re: What directors have made back to back great films?
Michael Curtiz. He directed YANKEE DOODLE DANDY which was nominated for 8 Oscars and won 3 including Jimmy Cagney for Best Actor and for Best Music. Curtiz himself was nominated for the picture. And the movie got a Best Picture nomination. His next movie after YANKEE DOODLE DANDY was CASABLANCA for which he won Best Director (and CASABLANCA won Best Picture).

I would say most of these directors works are great but I'll keep this to what the majority deems great And there are some with great movies that were technically back to back but If they directed anything of interest (short or tv or music video) then its void!! Tarantino- Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction Oliver Stone (pulled 7 in a row!!)- Salvador, Platoon, Wall Street, Talk Radio, Born on the Fourth of July, The Doors, JFK Sergio Leone (4 in a row!!)- A Fistful of Dollars, For A Few Dollars More, The Good The Bad and The Ugly, Once Upon a Time in the West Sidney Lumet- Dog Day Afternoon, Network Scorsese- Aviator, Departed Kubrick (3 in a row)- Dr. Strangelove, 2001, A Clockwork Orange Hitchcock- Vertigo, North by Northwest Akira Kurosawa- Ikiru, Seven Samurai Andrey Tarkovskiy- Andrei Rublev, Solaris Spielberg did it a few times- Jaws then Close Encounters; Raiders then ET; Empire of the Sun then Last Crusade; Jurassic Park then Schindler's List Nolan- Following then Memento; Then 4 in a row with Batman Begins, Prestige, The Dark Knight, Inception Soderbergh- Traffic, Oceans Eleven There's lots more this is just what I came up with off the top of my head...

Sam Raimi- Evil Dead 1-3. Spiderman 1 & 2. Probably can fit Argento, Bava, and Fulci in, but I can never remember the timelines on their films.

Totaly forgot about Argento!! Fuck Yeah there was a 4 streak there I think; Profondo Rosso, Suspiria, Inferno, Tenebre!! Fulci- The Beyond, House By the Cemetery!! Bava... I cant think of 2 in a row... Also Crimewave was inbetween Evil Dead 1 and 2!! You could go for Evil Dead 2, Darkman then Army of Darkness though!! I'd even keep that streak going with The Quick and the Dead and A Simple Plan!!
