Re: summer movie challenge
I'm just gonna go ahead and start posting again from today, then at the end of the year I'll do a massive post with everything I've seen!! August 27th Behind The Mask: The Rise Of Leslie Vernon [2006] - First Watch - 7.5/10
I loved that this film paid homage to some of the great slashers of the 80's. It didn't feel like a horror comedy, it felt alightly like satire but more than an appreciation of them, and that is part of the reason I enjoyed it so much. I thought it was clever, original and entertaining enough to keep me totally interested for the duration. Now I find myself wanting to watch it again, which is when I know I've really loved a film. I'd recommend it to anyone who hasn't seen it, and I'm annoyed at myself that I waited so long to see it. I feel like I should do a marathon: F13, NOES, Halloween then this anyone up for a movie night? The Haunting [1963] - First Watch - 5/10
I saw this on the same day as Behind The Mask and I didn't enjoy it nearly as much. I'm trying to watch some classics along with newer films so I'm doing double bills that don't really fit together lol. This was okay. I liked the setting and the acting was good, but it just didn't build enough tension for me. I really enjoy slow-paced films but this just felt like it was stalled rather than slow-paced. I wouldn't bother watching it again, it just didn't do enough for me. I did enjoy the ending though, but it wasn't good enough to light up the rest of the film. I generally like older horror but this was just a bit meh.

Re: summer movie challenge
August 28th (I'm a couple days behind with posting but I'll catch myself up!) House Of The Devil [2009] - First Watch - 6.5/10 I really enjoyed this. If this and Innkeepers are anything to go by, I'm really going to enjoy Ti West's career. It was creepy and suspenseful, really well acted and an interesting storyline. Besides the holes in the ending which we are discussing in the thread for the film, I thought it was excellent.

Re: summer movie challenge
August 29th Shutter [2004] - First Watch - 6/10 This was the original creepy Thai version of Shutter and I thought it was pretty good. I had to watch it in 2 sittings, which kind of destroyed the suspense a little, so I'll probably watch it again all in one go to experience it properly. I thought the suspense was really well done, by far the best thing about the film, and the medium of the camera to expose the 'ghost' was original and creepy. The backstory was good also, so all in all it was a decent film, but I just didn't find it as scary as people told me it would be, which left me a bit disappointed.

Re: summer movie challenge
August 30th When A Stranger Calls [1979] - First Watch - 2/10 It's not often I say a remake, especially one that is very recent, is better than an original but in this case, WASC 2006 was tons better than this one from '79. The first 15 minutes were great, I knew the story but it didn't stop it from being entertaining and tense. Then it devolved into over an hour of a really dull crime drama about a private detective looking for the killer. Really, really, incredibly dull. I cannot understand why on earth there was a need to go into that level of detail with virtually no shocks, scares or suspense for the vast majority of the film. The the ending 10 minutes is good, with the shock ending being the best part of the film. I enjoyed the ending and the opening 15 minutes. If that had been the whole film it would have been a decent flick. As it stands I was bored witless.
Re: summer movie challenge
August 31st Asylum Blackout [2011] - First Watch - 4/10 Interesting premise/update to a classic infected storyline. This time the protagonists are stuck inside a mental hospital with the patients, and none of them can escape. My biggest problem with this film is that it didn't know what it was. It flitted between psychological and an infected/zombie type thing. It was a bit all over the place. The ending pissed me off, if you're going to do an ambiguous ending that's fine by me, but you can't leave gaping huge plot holes by making the ending ambiguous. That's just irritating and makes you look lazy, either like you couldn't be bothered to make a proper ending, or you couldn't be bothered to iron out the plot holes.
The suspense was pretty well managed and it had a lot of promise, it really could have been good if someone more decisive was at the helm. At it stands it was purely mediocre with a bad ending.
