Re: The Science-y Stuff Thread
^^ Yeah, he didn't show up until a couple of us starting talking about the stuff from a few years ago. And poof, meatbag soulman. "I'm a soul man, doo da do!" Now he's bugging us over at skype, too. It's like a ferret that crawls into your pants and won't leave. Or is that just me?

Re: The Science-y Stuff Thread
Morgan Freeman could do a narrative about slime molds and I'd watch for the entire hour. He could do a narrative during a porno and I'd feel more educated afterwards. Dang, that guy is good!

Re: The Science-y Stuff Thread
Has anyone heard/read about the article that some doink writer wrote how we should just build giant air conditioner units to combat global warming? It was from like 5 years ago. And if you ask me why this is a stupid idea I will punch you.
Re: The Science-y Stuff Thread
Why is that a stupid idea, Az?

Re: The Science-y Stuff Thread
for you, I only give you the <strong monkey pimp hand slap> out of respect.
Re: The Science-y Stuff Thread
Ouchie. Felt like you put a little extra stank on that one, but I'll let it go. Now there's something I'd like to know the science of -- stank, as it pertains to the act of physically striking someone with one's pimp-hand.

Re: The Science-y Stuff Thread
^^ I have absolutely no idea how to respond to this. Are you purposely trying to out-weird me today?
Re: The Science-y Stuff Thread
Azzie, my boy, you have yet to see me really cut loose with the weirdness. I refrain, because I enjoy having friends.

Re: The Science-y Stuff Thread
^^ Considering the stuff we do on Skype and Thor/God/Loki/Allah/Yahweh hasn't struck us down, I think we're cool by them. Vishnu seems displeased, though. Shrug.
Re: The Science-y Stuff Thread
Pffft. Vishnu. "Ooh, look at me, I have four arms, I can type twice as fast as you can." Puh-lease...

Re: The Science-y Stuff Thread
Nifty story- the US just launched 2 new satellites into the Van Allen radiation belts. They should help measure and explore space weather, solar flares, etc.

Re: The Science-y Stuff Thread
I just ran into a neat website that has illustrations of spacecraft from all kinds of different shows/movies. Like Star Trek, Star Wars, Bab 5, Battlestar Galactica, etc. The cool thing is that they are all drawn to scale, so you can see and compare the various ships. I know, this is for the nerdy, but I am nerdy and I am a monkey. Top that! (Hmm, might have been better if I was a big rig driver. Oh well.)
Re: The Science-y Stuff Thread
Awesome...This was the last place I was expecting to end up having discussions about Quantum Physics and the nature of the universe but giddy up. As a contribution, Consider Georg Cantor's work on defining infinity. Basically, if you were to draw a circle, you could draw an infinite number of axes which all cross through the centre of the circle. However, continue each line beyond the circle and eventually a space will form between each line, thus allowing you to draw more lines...more than infinity...and Infinity of infinities...the concept starts to warp your mind the deeper you dig into it. Also, physicists are currently trying to prove whether or not we are living in a Computer Simulation.

Re: The Science-y Stuff Thread
^^ Heh heh, another science freak in our midst. Monkey likes. As to the concept of multiple infinities, there is actual notation to show the level of infinity (yeah, there is math for that). I'd have to dig out one of my books or Wiki it. The computer simulation question goes way back to philosophers wondering if we are just the product of someone's dream. Fascinating idea on how would you prove that we are not in a definitive reality? Remember the end of Men in Black with the universes in marbles within other universes? Run with that, and then we come up with- what is reality? Saw a show the other day about the Bermuda Triangle. They tried to sink a sailboat but blowing bubbles up at it from below (the methane explosion theory), but basically nothing happened. They got it to sink once they loaded it with 5000 pounds of bricks. Then they worked on planes- could lightning ignite a fuel tank. Oh, hell yeah! I think the show is called "Curiosity," though I could be wrong I can't wait for the hard science shows to start up again.
Re: The Science-y Stuff Thread
I watched this doc on the possibility of parallel universes on YouTube yesterday. Very interesting! It also includes the always cool Michio Kaku, too. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YEN0F1lm
plpp_video Along with that, I'm currently reading 'Surfing Through Hyperspace'. A fun, arm-chair type book that at the same time stretches the imagination.
Re: The Science-y Stuff Thread
Yeah I've read a few of his books. His work in String Theory and one called Physics of the impossible. I know he had a show with the same title and I guess the show was based on his ideas in the book...it's fun to see him work out the physics of teleportation and forcefields.
