The non-horror movie guessing game (Page 8 of 14)

The bloke on the right was 'THE DADDY' in Alan Clarke's brutal and highly controversial BBC film 'Scum' and the bloke in the middle got chopped into smithereens by Malcolm McDowell in Gangster No 1...............

Yeah, it's a crying shame you yankees don't get to see our films cos occasioanally they're worth a view. We tend to make rather dismal kitchen sink dramas these days but we still have some of the best acting talent going. Mine was from 'Nil By Mouth'.

It is Mr Winstone but I kinda revealed the title of the film in my previous post as it'd been up for days so please feel free to post any picture you fancy alien me mate...

This is more true than you think.  It's crazy the number of Brit actors showing up in H-wood these days.  So much in fact that there have been complaints from the US acting guild about all the juiciest roles going to Brits (and Welsh, and Australians).  Batman, Spider-Man, Thor, Superman, Loki and Ozymandias (Watchmen) to name just a few.

But I don't mind.  Brit actors tend to be better trained and hence more capable of breathing life into even mediocre roles.  When it comes to actors here in the states more emphasis is placed on looks instead of acting chops, which is why we have so many actors like Zack Effron, Jessica Alba, and Kat Dennings -- all so-called "pretty faces" but not a one of them could act their way out of a wet paper bag.

Well, Rickman may have been in a stereotypical Brit villain role but he made it fun and interesting.  When I think of the movie Die Hard, he (and Alexander Gudinov) are the first things that come to my mind, not wise-crackin' Bruce Willis.

That Alba vid -- yeah, that does nothing for me.  Maybe it's because I'm in my forties now and am just old and grizzled, but it takes more than a pretty face to interest me.  Besides, you haven't seen the majority of my ex-girlfriends.  At least two of them would put Alba to shame (and hell yeah, I am TOTALLY bragging ).

As for Boogie Nights, you're singing to the choir, man.  I LOVE that movie.  Easily in my top ten favorite non-horror flicks list.  Everybody in it is exceptional, from Wahlberg, to Reilly, to Reynolds, Heather Graham, Don Cheadle, Julianne Moore, William H. Macy, Alfred Molina, Thomas Jane...even all the bit players (including musician John Doe, front man for the punk band X, playing Moore's husband), Robert Downey Sr., Michael Penn, Nina Hartley...everybody, they're all fantastic.  And PT Anderson nailed the era, how it looks, how it feels, an impeccable soundtrack...it's one of those very, very rare movies about which I don't have one single complaint.

Incidentally, Hopkins and Bale?  Their ours now.  And you can't have them back.

Oh!  And another Brit who snapped up a heavily coveted role -- Charlie Hunnam as lead character Jax in the TV show Sons of Anarchy.  He embodies that character so well that it's on only the rarest of occasions that he slips a bit with the accent.  But the attitude, the "bro walk," the posturing...dude plays a great American bad ass biker.
