Cottage, SPOILER ALERT

So I saw this movie , well the beginning and the end because I slept through part of the middle.
Is the writer who rented the cottage sort of a Charles Manson type of person ? This is the impression that I got because he had numerous girlfriends and they seemed to do the killings for him . Did the daughter know this man before he rented their cottage ?
