Re: Disappointing year?

Fair enough,  It just middle of the road for me.  Not good but not terrible either.  I think the worst movie this year was The Wicker Tree.  It was just crap!  And I was really hopeful for that one...

Like, I hate it for a number of reasons (stated before) but all my reasons come back to the main point which is, it's not original and it's too stupid to be actually funny. I just get mad watching it because of how...well, stupid it is. There isn't barely a story either, it's just this wedding has gone to sh*t - end of.

I just honestly hate it.

I take it u are not a fan of Japanese horror like Tokyo Gore Police then lol

Hahahaha
What an amazingly great film this is.

Re: Disappointing year?

Cabin in the Woods is the best Mainstream Horror film to come out since Scream 2.  That isn't really saying much because Mainstream horror has been bad, but Cabin in the Woods seriously was something special.  Brought horror fans back to the 80s.  Grindhouse, Scream 4, Drag Me To Hell are a couple other mainstream horror movies that come to mind that are on the level of the classics from the late 70s, on through the 80s, but Cabin in the Woods was seriously something special for the genre.

We very rarely get good horror/comedies anymore.  A lot of people don't realize that THE BEST horror never took itself too seriously.  Evil Dead, Nightmare on Elm St, Halloween.  Even Horror classics like Carrie had a great story and group of characters.  These movies were just as fun as they were scary.  These days people think Horror is supposed to be dead serious.  They forget that the best forumula for a horror movie is one that doesn't use blood and gore to make a story, but clever ideas instead.  Good acting, good story is a key for horror movies and people forget this these days.  Cabin in the Woods gave us something completely refreshing.  2012 was a great year for horror thanks to Cabin in the Woods.

It was definitely a tough year for horror as far as depth is concerned, but I cannot say that there are 2 great horror movies every year, like there were in 2012 with Prometheus and Cabin in the Woods.  And Prometheus counts as horror if you are sitting in the theater scared shitless when the snake/alien thing is attacking.

You want to see a disappointing year?

Go look at 2011.

Scream 4 was great.  Fright Night remake was surprisingly good.  After that you have all kinds of stuff like Grave Encounters and Paranormal Activity which is what im talking about when I say BAD STORY.  They use the found footage feature as the selling point, instead of making actually a great movie.  Not saying these movies are terrible, just saying NOTHING in 2011 was on the level of Cabin in the Woods.  2010 had a lot more depth and some very good horror movies, but still, a great Horror comedy does so much more for me than something like Black Swan, or Insidious.  Loved both especially Black Swan.

Man 2010 was pretty crazy though.

Trollhunter, Hatchet 2, My Soul to Take, Stake Land, Let Me In, Tucker and Dale vs Evil.  I don't LOVE any of these movies but there was definitely a little bit of a horror movement in 2010.

^^
Cabin was the best since Scream 2?  That covers 15 years.

Re: Disappointing year?

am i the only one who can't see what all the fuss is about with " Cabin In The Woods"? to me it is the most maddening over hyped " Horror Film" since " Blair Witch" it's not even original, " Westworld" did it a lot better in 1973.

Re: Disappointing year?

The good:
The Grey,
[REC} 3
The Woman in Black
The Bay
Sinister

The okay:
The Pact
Excision
Grabbers
The Possession
The Devil Inside

The bad:
The Cabin in the Woods,
Cockneys Vs. Zombies,

The ugly:
Piranha 3DD
Intruders.

My horror of the year has to go to 'The Grey' or Sinister. Overall, hardly a vintage year for horror but not a bad one either.

2012 gets a 7/10 from me! big_smile

Re: Disappointing year?

^ I'd agree that Intruders was horrible, kind of just wasn't good...in any way, shape, or form.

I LOVED Intruders. But I HATED The Devil Inside.
Woman In Black didn't impress me at all. Didn't hate it but didn't like it either.

Re: Disappointing year?

Cabin did get some mixed reviews but I was on a complete mission to not read or see anything before watching the movie so I wouldn't go into it with high expectations. Same with VHS and Prometheus. I find it's better that way so I don't have any disappointment. I went into VHS with a low expectation and it impressed me. Maybe my biggest problem is reading too much which is why I am often disappointed with a lot of movies, especially mainstream. I liked Scream 4 until the majorly over the top ending but I read endless reviews praising the ending..

Re: Disappointing year?

I wouldn't say Cabin in the Woods got mixed reviews.  91 percent of critics liked it according to Rottentomatoes.  I am not a big fan of that site or judging movies based off it, but critics LOVED Cabin in the Woods as did most Horror fans.  As far as Horror movies go, it got as good of reviews as you can possibly get.  185 out of 205 critics liked it on that site.  Pretty amazing.

There are so many great things about the film.  The acting all the way from Richard Jenkins to Hemsworth.  The moments of "Everything is going to be OK, don't panic," Turned into a knife right through the throat.  Hemsworth trying to make the jump across the cliff and his buddy telling him not too hold back, while Hemsworth replied "I never do."  There are so many darn funny moments in the movie and it does it all while staying a horror film.  Pays homage to basically every horror movie we've ever seen.  Certain things like the set of the cellar are just so interesting.  There was so much more to the idea of the movie that we didn't get to see.  What if the Merman would have been chosen? What if a different monster would have been chosen? It leaves so much up to the imagination, while still playing it all out in the movie.  You can't help but wonder "how does the Cenobite kill people."
Overhyped Cabin in the Woods? Who cares?

I went to the theater knowing nothing about it except that my buddy had a good feeling.  We walked out of the theater with our minds blown.  I said to him do you realize that these guys just basically fit every horror monster ever into one damn film.  The shit was Evil Dead on steroids. I talked to so many people who felt the same way.  The ONLY people I've seen who don't like the movie are a couple people on this site who feel it was "overhyped."

Don't read many other sites much?

Re: Disappointing year?

I loved Cabin the first time I saw it, but upon a second viewing noticed the weaknesses.  Still decent horror entertainment, though, and at least it was an original idea and not another torture porn, slasher or zombie flick.

Agreed. Plus I don't go by official reviewers. Much prefer listening to ACTUAL FANS like us here and other horror sites so what FHM say doesn't bother me but I found about 60% loved it the rest either liked it but found it floored or plainly hated it.

Re: Disappointing year?

I'm getting tired of people making generalizations for this site.  There are many active participants, and none of us agree on anything 100%.

That being said, I haven't seen Cabin yet. But nothing has really blown my skirt up this year (that I've noticed).
